Vitamin A in pregnancy

Hi. Just wondering if anyone can reassure me. I'm in my second trimester and I've been having Horlicks maybe a few times a week. I knew I wasn't supposed to have vitamin a supplements but I had no idea Horlicks contains it - I just randomly checked today.

Do you think everything will be ok. Should I tell my midwife? I'm trying not to be stressy during this pregnancy but it's hard because we had such a long journey to get here.

Any reassurance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi you have nothing to worry about. I just had a look at Horlicks. It contains about 285ug of Vit A. The RNI for Vit A in pregnancy is 700ug. Vitamin A is essential in pregnancy but very high amounts in supplements can be toxic. Liver has about 20 times the RNI for Vit A so advised to avoid in pregnancy. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'm not drinking much tea or coffee (except a bit of decaf or a proper one when I don't have decaf in), and I've totally gone off peppermint/chamomile so Horlicks has become a bit of an alternative because it's still nice to enjoy hot drinks in this cold weather!

Have you tried Rooibos (redbush) tea ? I love it now. I take milk in it too just like ordinary tea. I now prefer it to ordinary tea!

Hi , i think horlicks is fine. I drink horlicks every morning and i did mention to my midwife and she says if its caffine free then its fine to drink.

I've totally gone off tea and coffee so Horlicks is my go to. Need something hot to get through this horrible winter!
