FET could be delayed - Thyroid Advice?

So after our first failed transfer in Sept, we had our follow up app’mnt last week & planned to start our Frozen cycle in 2 weeks.

However, consultant wanted another thyroid TSH test & has just called to say I’m borderline under active (4.07) & the optimal range for going through treatment is less than 2.5!! She wants to put me on thyroid meds & take more bloods in 4weeks!! Delaying our Frozen cycle!!

Has anyone else experienced this? So gutted at the delay....yet another hurdle!! 😢xx

Hey hun

Sorry to hear this. I have an under active thyroid but with medication it is working fine. It is a condotion that can make you feel quite poorly. I take medication each morning. They increased my medication for IVF. The meds are doing a good job. Hopefully they will for you too. So when you next have your bloods it will be working fine and you can go ahead xx

Thank you so much for replying!!

So sorry to hear you have this also, but pleased to hear they have it under control for you!! 😊

I’ve not really got any symptoms....I guess maybe a little tired, often feel the cold bad....but that may not even be due to this!! 😏 Periods are normal etc!!

Do you mind asking, did it take long for your levels to go into the optimal range? xx

hi hun.

the reason they won't allow treatment to begin is because when your levels aren't under control, it can increase miscarriages, as you don't have enough hormone for yourself and your baby will deplete yours until after the first trimester when it produces its own. The Ranges are different everywhere but my fertility doctor started me on thyroid meds when it was 3.5 and gave me repeat bloods after 6 weeks and that continued until i was stable. Which was about 8 weeks.

frustrating as it is, the delay is the best thing, because you need to be healthy to give your baby the best shot 😊 the current guidelines say your levels should be under 2.5 or about half where you are now.

they will probably start you on 25mcg of thyroxin and retest in 6 weeks.once you begin taking it, its usually life long. But it's literally 1 tablet a day, no big deal at all. But essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby ☺

Thank you for getting back to me & for your really helpful message!! That definitely puts some context to what I was told today!!

They didn’t actually say we couldn’t go through with the frozen round now, but advised against it due to my levels....so obviously we won’t risk it!!

The annoying thing is she said when she checked my records my results n January - TSH was 4 then....so presumably I should have been on meds before now?! But I haven’t been and I’ve been through a full fresh IVF cycle since!! 🤔 that was our bfn tho, but 3 Frozen!

She said I’d be on 50mg initially?! xx

50 is a big dose to begin with. They usually start on 25, and increase gradually in 25 mcg increments. I was started on 50, and because it speeds up metabolism, I had the WORST stomach cramps in diaroeah. They stopped it and went for a more gentle paced start. and my body got used to it.

I would agree yes you should have already been started on them, but the lab ranges are different everywhere. My recent bloods were around 2 and they've just nudged me up again.

when I was pregnant, they wanted to keep it under 1. I'm sure my thyroid was why I wouldn't get, or then stay pregnant. Once I was stabilised, i got pregnant and have a bundle snoring next to me right now ❤

one thing i learned is you have to be proactive with it, and i was on at my gp every 6 weeks throughout the pregnancy keeping a very beady eye on my levels. As soon as your pregnant, it will need another increase. don't be afraid to nag and push. 💪 it will.be precious cargo your carrying so get all the care you need ❤😊

Oh great so I may have that to look forward to as well!! 😏 as if the fertility journey isn’t tough enough....more just keeps coming at ya all the time!! However, I just keep reminding myself it will all be so worth it!!

Your story gives me so much hope & im so pleased you got your wee bundle of joy!! 💗

I’ve been ‘unexplained’ for 2 years and I’m not wondering if this has contributed to it!!

Thank u for the tip on keep pushing them, I def will....especially if I’m lucky enough to get my positive!! xxx

I'm on levothyroxine 25mg daily after my thyroid was found d to be sub under active. As the others said I think it's a good thing they have monitored it! It effects your hormones and can cause miscarriage. I would definitely wait till it's sorted. I know it's annoying but it'll be worth it x

Thank you, yes just frustrating but we will definitely wait, we wouldn’t risk it!! Annoying tho as my TSH was apparently 4 back in Jan and I’ve been through a full fresh cycle since and it’s only now they’re mentioning it!!!

How are you doing?! Hope you’re taking the time to heal, my heart broke for you!! This is such an awful journey!! 💔 xx
