IVF but has Swollen ankles and feet

Hi, I am a new member to the group and I am delighted to be here. I have been married for more than 18 years. Only myself and my husband, no children. I am now 41 and we really would like to have a little one! I suffer from water retention in my legs and my ankles and feet gets swollen most times especially when the time gets hot. I have recently moved from a size 14 to 16 subsequently the increase in weight causes the swelling daily. I am very concerned as if I get pregnant my ankles and feet may pop up due to the increase in weight from the pregnancy. We had decided not to have a little one but all of sudden that's all we talk about. Miscarriages in the past, blocked tube and was told IVF is required. My husband is 44. Any advice please!

Hello and welcome!

I'm currently going through my first cycle of IVF (unexplained infertility and myself and my partner are 39 years old) and have the egg collection tomorrow morning and feeling nervous. There's some excellent advice on here and it really helps to hear other people's stories and experiences.

Did you mention your worries with the water retention to your clinic? I don't suffer with that myself but there will probably be someone on here who does so hopefully they will have some advice for you.

Must have been awful suffering a miscarriage 😥 I'm really sorry to hear that.

Fingers crossed for your IVF journey. have you any idea when it starts?

Hi Ninic25, thank you for your response. Yes, I spoke to my GP who said I will need to attend counselling before the treatment. I have not decided to go through with the process as yet; we are both scared. Still thinking if we should go ahead!

I was told by a nurse that it might be good for my legs as sometimes improvements are made with a condition during pregnancies. This was reassuring but we are still worried.

Congrats to you and your husband on the journey so far! Please promise to let me know how things went for the egg collection tomorrow.

The egg collection was not as bad as I thought it would be! Phew! They collected 7 eggs and we are now waiting for a call tomorrow to let us know they are developing. Keeping everything crossed.

I'm 42, was 41 when we started tests and treatment after 2 miscarriages from natural pregnancies. You'll already know our fertility falls as we get older so I wouldn't wait too long to start treatment. We've had 2 failed cycles of ICSI and are now going to go along the egg donor route. Just be aware that this is the standard suggestion for older ladies after 2 cycles. I was shocked when it was suggested. Some private clinics will treat women up to age 50. Counselling might help you get your head round it all. Infertility treatment has made me very aware of my age, I'm considering wearing a badge that says "I'm 42" on visits to the clinic!

Glad to hear that the egg collection went well! Any further news?

I went to my GP but they have now switched the focus on my legs I.e ankles and so on and I am now on water tablets. They are now doing further investigations re the cause of the swelling. I have gained weight which enhances the swelling as well so they are putting the IVF possibility on hold for now!

Thanks for the heads-up re the number of cycles. I see! I might have limited chances especially now it's being put on hold because they are now turning attention to the causes of the swelling in my legs. Thank you and I certainly hope all goes well for you!
