Hello! So I had my 20 week scan a little late - 22+1 weeks and I was diagnosed with a low lying placenta. I read on Tommy’s that I should be given a 32 week scan to check if it’s moved or whether at risk of premature birth. Should I query this with the midwife? Has anyone else had this and what was the experience?

Low lying placenta
Hi. I also had this recently at my 20 week scan. I have now got another scan booked in at 32 weeks, so they said to make sure I ask them to re-check it then (in case they don’t read the notes properly!). I’d say it’s probably worth checking with your midwife yes. I’ve since spoken to quite a few people who had the same diagnosis at 20 weeks but then later in it had moved (someone quoted me that 90% do move). We have a whole host of other complications so really hoping it moves by then 🤞xx
Hey lovely,
I’ve had this with both of my pregnancies, it’s very common and 90% of the time it moves up as the baby grows. Mine has both times.
My hospital books a rescan at 36 weeks to check if it’s moved enough but if you end up having an additional scans along the way (sometimes you might get sent for a growth scan etc) you can ask them to check it then.
Try not to worry and if you don’t get a letter from the hospital with a scan date within a couple of weeks, flag it with your midwife xx
Thanks Kiboxx I also read that 90% move up so I’m not too stressed but I’m just a little concerned that they only booked me in for another scan at 36+1. And I’m guessing at 41 with a low lying placenta they still have me listed as low risk but this might raise the risk a little - and I couldn’t see why they wouldn’t have booked me for a 32 week scan if that’s the norm. Will definitely query with the midwife thanks!
I think different hospitals have different ways of doing things! My hospital is definitely 36 weeks for rescan, the same as if the baby was breech etc. My sonographer said they leave it to 36 weeks as gives as much time as possible for it to move enough and ultimately if it hadn’t moved and you needed a c section, it wouldn’t be before then anyway so I wouldn’t worry about the timing too much x
Oh okay! That’s good to know. I’ll ask the midwife anyway but good that it’s maybe not needed. He did explain to me what it was - but I didn’t know enough about it when he said but he basically said it should still be fine for a vaginal birth as long as I’ve had no procedures like fibroids or a c section - I said I’d had an mc and polyps removed and he said that was fine, so maybe it’s prognosis is not that bad x
Hi there, I had this with my son and the placenta went up by itself. In most cases it does xx
With my first ivf pregnancy I had a low lying placenta as well, they told me to take it easy and not lift heavy things no rough exercise and that I will probably move up and it did!!I ended giving birth naturally!
This ivf pregnancy again same problem low lying placenta at 18 weeks and my doctor told she will keep checking in hopes it will rise around 32 weeks
Hope your placenta rises up too!
