Diet help for NAFLD

I am 48 and was recently diagnosed with fatty liver and am experiencing pain in my upper right side, low back, fatigue, and some elevated liver enzymes. I am trying to change eating habits and want to lose 15 lbs- my question is how much carbs should I allow a day? Is bread totally forbidden? I am not a big meat eater so I usually ate more carbs but after finding this website, I am realizing that I need to cut those as well. Any diet suggestions? I ordered olive oil that I saw you recommended but what should my daily meals look like? And what helps bring down the triglycerides? Mine have always been very high ( I don’t eat red meat).

Also, is it bad to take ibuprofen for the pain? I know Tylenol stresses the liver- what about Advil?

Thanks for the suggestions-

Hi 3Ls

In simple terms, refined carbs are your enemy. A rule of thumb, don't eat anything white.

Everyone has to find combinations that work for them, but the more nuts, plants of all kinds, and seeds the better and minimize vegetable oil and saturated fats. You have found some of the discussions of diet on the website so that is one place to dig into. Lifestyle is many small decisions over a long time. You can eat a lot if you want just make it mostly vegetables and have your breads be whole grain not refined flour. Combine that with increased use of polyunsaturated fats like olive oil and you liver will be happier.

Wayne- thank you for the information- it’s very helpful. What is your experience with pain relievers? Advil seems to be the only thing I can take to help with the URQ pain and back pain that I am constantly dealing with. I know Tylenol is hard on the liver so I avoid that- what about Advil taken daily? Thanks-

Pain meds are a difficult challenge as they are generally processed by the liver. Tylenol is recommended by many docs but others suggest NSAIDs like advil. The point is that all of them stress the liver so dose is the big problem. People tend to take more than their liver can manage and that causes problem. Advil also has kidney risks so docs think about that when they make suggestions. The drugs that work best are addictive so no easy answers. Here is some info on Advil toxicity which may be useful. Tylenol in overdose is very bad for the liver but is useful for many when taken as directed. Best to ask your doc.

Aspirin & ibuprofen are never to be taken if you have liver disease. Remember….everything is processed by the liver.
