13 months ago my life changed. I was diagnosed with a double whammy - "prominent" fatty liver and hemochromatosis, a genetic iron overload disorder which causes added strain to the liver. Being in my early 40's this was devastating. I was slightly overweight at the time, 6ft tall around 200lbs which for me was heavy. My diet habits were always pretty ok. My downfall was sugar, carbs, and probably a bit too much wine (typically with dinner on most nights). So i started my journey - completely eliminated sugar (all added sugar as well), no "white carbs" whole grains only, red meat, alcohol (for the first 4 months), processed foods, and fatty foods. Pivoted to more of a plant based diet. Would still have poultry or fish a couple of times per week. Loaded up on coffee, olive oil and ratcheted up the exercise (i play full court basketball multiple times per week). At the same time i was being treated for my hemochromatosis via phlebotomy (ie frequent blood donations) to reduce the amount of iron in my blood. I experienced a 30lb weight loss during this time. Got a Fibroscan earlier this year which showed no fibrosis. Finally went for a MRI of my liver last week - just got results back yesterday. NO HEPATIC STEATOSIS. LIVER IS "UNREMARKABLE" (IE. NORMAL). Just sharing as you can see it is true that you can reverse this condition. I don't plan on changing a thing. For the past several months i even have been enjoying my glass or 2 of red wine once or twice per week. Gotta live life. It's all about balance. Happy Thanksgiving!
