Epilepsy Meds and non NSAIDS with NAFLD

Hi there! I'm a newbie with a couple questions. Does anyone know which epilepsy meds aren't as hard on the liver? I'm currently on Keppra and Topamax. Also, I have ehlers danlos, so chronic pain is a serious issue. I've developed asthma and an allergy to NSAIDS. Does anyone have recommendations for pain relievers that are not so liver-harsh? I appreciate any help on any aspect of this. There are no Hepatologists anywhere near me and I live in the NY epicenter (Orange County) of this madness. Sooo... Getting an appointment anytime soon is not in the cards as doctors afar are hesitant to take patients from here. Que Sera Sera ❤️

That gets us into areas where we aren't qualified. Many of us face the problem of no local specialists so we certainly feel for you. Here is a link that might be of some help medlineplus.gov/ency/articl...

Thank you both for the information. I understand you cannot give medical advice, so even being pointed in the right direction is a big help. When I do go to my neurologist or physician, I have to go as my liver's advocate as it seems to often get dismissed. So thank you again for the information 😊

I have some fibrosis of the liver. I take pregabalin for neuropathy and this doesn't upset my liver. I can take very few medications without getting horrible symptoms as my liver tries to metabolise them. Gabapentin is another one that I can take. I can't take paracetamol, my liver hates it. I can codeine for pain relief and this doesn't give me symptoms either. It's best to really talk to your doctor as everyone is different and some people here are on meds that give me terrible symptoms so I believe depending on what caused your liver condition may be a factor. I believe mine was caused by medication hence the reason I have an aversion to most. I always check livertox online before taking anything, even after I speak to my GP, just so I'm well informed. X

Thank you so much for the reply! Pregabalin (Lyrica) was just recently discussed with my GP as it addresses both my epilepsy and pain. I'm glad to know that, at least in one case, as it appears on Livertox, it seems a safe med.

My liver damage has also been a direct result of my liver's poor reaction to my high dose seizure meds. I rarely drank alcohol in my life, was always an athlete, ate a generally healthy diet, and have no know genetic hepatic issues. That left us with my meds.

I actually maintained normal blood work until recently and was unaware that my fatty liver was even an issue. Like many, I started having fatigue and pain and when my BUN and AST were irregular, it was the smack upside the head I needed to do more research and change every possible aspect of my life and health.

That being said, I so appreciate any information you guys have as I seem to live in a twilight zone of doctors who don't know much about any condition I have, but especially don't seem to take liver issues seriously. We are our own best advocates and I guess it's my time to step up for myself!

Hi, I have been taking pregabalin for several years for neuropathic pain, and it seems to work reasonably well. I tapered off for a few months last year due to weight gain issues, which my GP says are common with Pregabalin. After ceasing Pregabalin I lost 14 pounds of the 28 pounds I had gained, with relatively little effort. I have had to restart Pregabalin on a lower dose, because the pain was so bad. I am now trying to get a balance between no further weight gain and pain relief. It is a difficult situation. I have hypermobile EDS.
