My son is 3 years old and from the age of 6 months he has suffered with constipation he has been on laxatives but they gave him stomach cramps so doctors moved him to movicol which he has taken since he was just over 7 months he is under a pediatrician who has told me when my son goes days without pooping to up his dose to 8 sachets a day the thing is my son has never had a really painful bowl movement as you would think that would give him reason to hold in his poo he has just always struggled to go but when he does goes it is always wet slush never solid I don’t think he has ever had a solid poo ever! I am not sure what is the best dose of his movicol to keep him on now on a daily basis he normally has one in the morning and one at night but is this making him too soft , he can go 4 days without going then he will go another 2 sometimes 3 days of non stop pooping we started potty training 8 weeks ago the weeing in the potty is fine he has achieved that so well it’s the poop he constantly poops his pants we have days when he can spend most his day on and off the potty trying to get the poop on the potty after he has done half of a poop in his pants it’s not soiling and he does quite a bit in his pants he has soiled in the past when it’s just marks in his underwear or nappies but recently he does full poops in his pants this weekend I have spent constantly changing him cleaning him up we have gone through so many pants and pull ups! I tell him poop for potty or toilet we need to flush it away he knows this as he has done poops on potty before after me sitting him on there with his favourites tv show on to distract him but he will just not take himself or tell me he needs a poop he goes to nursery all week and has accidents there some days he don’t go there other days it could be everyday I collect him his has had a poop accident I really don’t know what to do anymore I am a mum of 4 and my other 3 children i never experienced this with them I don’t know what to do about the movicol my boy has a brilliant diet he loves his fruit veg ect he drinks loads I am just so sad by it all as I don’t know what to do anymore
Any advice would be really appreciated

My son is 9 now and also had trouble since he was a baby, I have never been able to get an answer as to why this all started which is very frustrating.
Based on how long he goes between poos and the consistency when he does go if he has overflow and needs to do a disimpaction. I would ask your doctor about this. The other thing to potentially explore is a food allergy (this was definitely not the case for my son)
Thank you for your reply it’s so very stressful isn’t it ? How does your boy find it now and while he is at school ect? I do feel I need to investigate my boy more as it could be something he eating that isn’t agreeing with him but doctors have always just lead me to believe he just another kid with constipation
He’s doing really well now and has been off medicine since December which is the longest time we’ve ever had. I wrote a long post about our journey through constipation which will give you a bit of an idea of everything we have tried.
School has been interesting and has depended slightly on the teachers he has. I have come to the realisation that so long as I’m super on the routines whenever he is home and ask him to do it at school I have to accept things won’t go as well there as they do at home.
Good luck with everything and I hope you manage to get things sorted a lot quicker than we did.
Wow I just read your post and I felt like I had written it myself.
We had very bad constipation issues with my son from 6 months too (he is now 4 years old). He was on Movicol from about 9months, twice a day. We started potty training him just before he turned 3.... he had poo accidents all the time. We kept being told to keep him in his pants, well we had the most stressful year, trying to get him to poo on the toilet, he would always soil his pants too. It’s funny how your son is the same and also is on movicol. We actually stopped weaned him off the movicol before potty training.
I wish I could give you words of advise for the poos. We tried many techniques such as poo presents, star charts etc etc. I do wonder because we had a poo issue with him from 6 months that is why we had trouble with potty training. Do get in touch if you have any questions? Oh son is now 4, and poo’s so well on the toilet now and even at school goes by himself. I pray it continues!! At least I might give you a glimmer of hope that your soon will also stop soiling too.
