LAP? scans?: i hear alot of ladies talking... - Endometriosis UK
LAP? scans?
Any scans like ultrasound, MRI or CT wont show any endo unless there is cyst or lump. And this is not the case for most of us, even if there is a cyst, endo could be in any possible location inside the abdomen/pelvis.
i guess its a standard procedure for doctors to exclude anything else going wrong, but a diagnosis for endo is only possible by lap and still at that point needs a good experienced endo gynae.
my first gynae 'missed' the endo during my lap, but took pictures of the area with endo and never told me anything. Only when i say a top endo gynae he informed me what the pics included and I ended up having a second lap within 5 months to remove endo...
Hi,
I had a CT, MRI scan and then an ultrasound guided biopsy to determine what a lump in my abdominal wall was. However I then had mine removed by open surgery due to its location, however because it was in the abdominal wall they didn't go deep enough to see if I had more endo and I am now in more pain than before the op so they think that I possibly have more endo deeper in my pelvis. I wish they had done a lap as hopefully it would have all been removed. My surgeon said to me that he preferred to do all scans/biopsy first to rule out anything sinister so I guess it depends on the actual surgeon. Good luck whatever happens

Hi
I'd also agree it depends on hospital policy and even then to some extent it varies from one gynae consultant to another.
In some ways I had my treatment back to front. I had an initial gynae appt where I was informed the next step was a lap and a scan. The surgery date came through before the scan and when I queried it I was told it was fine to have the scan after the lap. It seemed a bit bonkers to me but two weeks later I had the lap and a week after that the scan.
I have to say it wasnt ideal as my abdomen was still bruised, swollen and tender. I didnt really want want the sonographer pressing too firmly on it either.
As other ladies above have said it is very unlikely that endo shows up on a scan. But a scan would rule out anything else visible such as fibroids, polyps etc which may be causing you unwanted symptoms.
Good luck with your treatment, x
Hey
I had a trans vaginal and ultra sound scan in February they said I needed the scans before I have the Lap I think it is just procedure for some hospitals and also to make sure you do not have any massive cysts or anything abnormal going on that needs to be dealt with straight away x
I had a tv ultrasound before I got referred to the hospital so my GP could check if there were any obvious cysts causing the problems, I've never had an MRI or CT but the hospital where I was seen didn't have either scanner so the consultant didn't have a choice but to operated "blind" x
I had an ultra-sound and an internal scan within 3 weeks of going to my GP. I think they do this to rule out cancer etc.. x
sorry i didnt make myself clear i have endo was diognosed 6 years ago just hurd alot off people talking about scans before hand but thanks for your comments i just wont them to scan me my ovaries are terribly painful!
