I have been to the docs today and think its best to get the mirena taken out, it was used as a treatment for endo. i am really nervous about it hurting when i get the coil taken out, has anyone else had it taken out and if so, does it hurt? My doctor assured me that it doesn't however i'm still worried that it will!

I nearly passed out twice when they inserted mine but it didnt hurt at all coming out, it was a relief as my womb had been contracting since they put it in. Everyone is different, I did take tramadol before going though so that may have masked any pain I would've had xx

I had mine taken out at hospital, but only because I was having another one put in. It was the only time during the whole procedure that I swore, but that was because she didn't tell me she was going to do it so I wasn't expecting it. It did sting, but it lasted all of two seconds. By the time I'd finished saying "Bloody hell!" it was out and over with. I haven't had children and I have a retroverted uterus so I was expecting the whole thing to be a lot more painful than it actually was.

You could arrange to go into hospital and have it out, but if your doctor knows your circumstances and is confident that he/she can get it out with no problems - and remember, they do this all the time - why put yourself through the stress of a hospital appointment and everything that it entails?

Take a painkiller before you go and as impatient says, if the pain is unbearable, tell them to stop. But remember it will be over and done with in seconds and then you can go home :)

Good luck x

I have never had a smear test before, i've had internal examinations before and they hurt quite a bit. As i'm 16 i've not had children before, and i was having an op when they inserted the coil also and found i got sharp pains in my hips and down my legs!! :( i really want it taken out, but i'm worried about the pain! i've also just been informed i am in for a cystoscopy friday as well which i am also concerned about! It will be in a hospital, so i will ask for some kind of pain relief as i don't really want to be all there when it's happening. Thank you for the replies!

I had two failed attempts at insertion, then had it put in under general anaesthetic in the end. Had it taken out fine. I too was worried about the pain, but the doctor was so good about it. I'm not sure if they do this everytime, but she got me to cough, and pulled it out while i coughed. it took a couple of practises (coughing that is) so that she knew the best point to remove it. I did smart a little for a second but after that - SO MUCH BETTER!!! Take something maybe an hour or 30 minutes before and that will help. To be honest, it is nothing to worry about! Try not to worry as being tense may make it feel worse than it is. Anticipation is probably the worst - all over so quick!! :-) xx

Thank you! I was so worried about having it taken out, just got to hear back from my gynecologist as my GP doesn't think it's a good idea having the pill and the mirena coil in, so recommended having it out. i wanted it out anyway as i keep getting pain in my hips and down my leg! Now having a cystoscopy on friday which i am now equally nervous about xx
