Hi everyone! So I’ve got myself into a really low state today and feel that I don’t know where to turn! I’ve had 2 laparoscopies, latest one shows uterus completely stuck, chocolate cyst and possible deep infiltration in the bowel. Gynaecologist has recommended Hysterectomy with potential bowel surgery. I feel scared to have this op. Gynaecologist recommended I go away and do my research and make up my mind in a couple of weeks. Anyone been through similar and/or decided against surgical intervention?!

Blasted endometriosis - it’s an absolute nightmare!

Thanks everyone!

I hope they were more empathetic about it. It’s a big decision and surgery! Do you mind me asking how old you are? Because a hysterectomy is a big deal, especially to premenopausal women. I have had a lot of dealings with doctors recently and big decisions to make and it is SO important to have a consultant who is both knowledgeable AND can communicate their knowledge well to the untrained. It is not about the outcome - if it’s the best thing for you, the recommendation will remain the same. But it matters how this was explained/talked through.

Thank you for your reply Popcorn. I am 44 next month. The Consultant is an endo specialist at an approved BSGE centre so I feel confident in him . however, I guess I feel disappointed that I haven’t been given any alternative options - perhaps there isn’t any and I’m simply looking for something that doesn’t exist!

It is worth asking though. Would hormone treatment, for example, relieve symptoms? What is best for you and, my favourite question: what would you do? (If they’re a man ask what they would recommend their wife/daughter to have).

absolutely! I will definitely ask that question. My understanding is that hysterectomy isn’t always the answer! Thanks again Popcorn!

I’m 45 and I’m having excision and total hysterectomy in a few weeks. Yes there are drawbacks but there was research just last year demonstrating that those of us with Endo are 10 times more likely to get ovarian cancer. I want my ovaries out now. They’ve done what they needed to do and times up!

Thank you Rosie. Yes, my consultant mentioned that about the cancer. He also said the return of endo rate is only 2% which sounds good!
