Desogestrel and Mirena coil

Hi I was just wondering if anyone has had the mirena and been prescribed Desogestrel (progesterone only pill). If so what was your experience like with it ? As I’m still getting a lot of pain with the mirena and was advised this would be the best option.

hey, ive never had the mirena but I’ve been on desogestrel for 4 months now. I still have periods atm but they’re much lighter. I do still get pain and fatigue like before I started the pill, but I’m hoping after a few more months my periods stop altogether so my symptoms lesson

I’ve been on Desogestrel since last September as a last resort, after heavy periods and pain during sex became too much to handle. I was bleeding intermittently for 3 months and everything finally feels normal ish again! I still have fatigue, but I feel ok mental health wise (which was my main concern after a bad experience with the combined pill and Mirena coil). If anything I feel slightly more in control of my emotions, I no longer have pain and don’t have periods at all which is such a relief. I do suffer with bloating still, and the odd migraine, but the pros have massively outweighed the cons for me.

Try and stick with it for 6 months, but if things haven’t settled by then, then maybe it isn’t for you. Hope it all works out!

Hi!

I did this from January 2024 until April 2024 for the same reason. The mirena coil I had hadn’t stopped my bleeding, it had lessened it but I still bled monthly for about 10 days, and still had some pain. I was told by the gynaecologist that they try to stop the bleeding in the hopes that it will stop the pain.

For me, I didn’t personally enjoy the experience. I found from a mental side of things I was very emotional. My favourite example of this was I cried 6 times in the space of 4 hours one morning, all for different things that would normally never be an issue, the final time because my partner looked at me nicely 😂 I also struggle with hypermobility, and the increase in progesterone caused issues with that as well, so just wasn’t a fun experience all round.

However, saying all that, it did nearly stop my bleeding, and the pain was reduced too - it didn’t stop it but it did help.

After desogestrel, I tried Norgeston which is a lower dose of progesterone compared to desogestrel. I had fewer side effects mentally and physically, which was a definite plus, but ultimately again found it helped a little but definitely didn’t stop the pain.

Ultimately, you never know unless you give it a go. It could be a really positive experience for you, and if you hate it, you can always come off the mini pill super easily. Good luck!
