Lap booked - should I have the mirena coil?

Hi everyone, I've got my first lap booked for end of August and they say they can also put in the mirena coil during this.

I'd love to hear people's experiences with the mirena coil, pros and cons, things the doctor doesn't tell you, anything you'd like to know before having it. I'd really appreciate any comments to help me make this decision.

Thank you all!

My first experience with the Mirena coil was horrific but only because the GP has not inserted it properly and caused alot of pain, so I had it removed.

The 2nd time I got it, it was done at the sexual health clinic and the gynae doctor used a scanner to ensure it was inserted properly. Since then I have had no problems or pain and I forget that I even have it.

You will experience some bleeding afterward, but that is quite common and takes a few weeks to settle. Afterward you should be great.

Whatever you do, don't get it done by GP, they are hopeless.

Good luck

Thank you so much for commenting, I'll make sure to avoid the GP and go to a sexual health clinic instead. Really glad you're getting on OK with it now!

I regret getting the Mirena coil more than anything. It’s caused me all kinds of neurological and mood issues. When I finally persuaded them to remove it they couldn’t find it. I needed an ultrasound, an X Ray and another ultrasound to locate it and will be having a hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic in a few weeks to remove it. It’s taken 2 months to get it out!

I would recommend joining a few of the Mirena F B groups and read people’s experiences before getting it. I wish I had.

Hi, people's experiences of it vary wildly. Some people have terrible experiences whilst others feel it helped helps hugely. I don't think you will know unless you try it ultimately. My experience is that I had it inserted in March this year whilst I was in for laparoscopic surgery. Personally it has helped the pain levels and reduced bleeding so I feel it has helped. It's worth saying it can take around 6 months for your body to settle/get used to it. Whist my periods are lighter, I am bleeding for longer (about 12 days) so this is something to consider but overall I think that is slowly getting better x

I’ll say I didn’t know what decision to make during my lap about it - I opted to have it fitted as I could get it removed if it didn’t work out for me. It was fitted while I was under GA for my lap and while I’ll say I bled a lot afterwards and was in pain, panic attacks when I couldn’t find the strings the first few times - it’s been worth it for me! Haven’t had a period for months now, reduced pain and I feel more like myself since having stopped the pill and the coil has settled (I actually have a sex drive now!) my parter has only felt it once since it’s been fitted but it’s still in place and working well. I know it won’t work for everyone but I would say give it a go, don’t judge it till you try it ☺️ if it doesn’t agree with you, you can still get it removed
