The consultant has just prescribed Prostap injections, whilst I'm on the waiting list for a hysterectomy through endometriosis.

Has anyone used Prostap? And what were/ are your experiences?

I was on them for 6 months last year. I struggled with the menopausal symptoms, so was given add-back hrt. I also was very constipated after the injection was first given, so used Laxido to help. Personally, it didn't help me as the hrt counteracted everything. I'm in the same situation now, following a hystetectomy. The hrt has flared everything up. I hope it helps you 🙏 xx

Ive just had my 4th injection. The 1st 2 monthd were hard with flare ups, bleeding and i needed the hrt after 1st month due to menopause symptoms. Injection 3 i had a good month hardly any pain and no period for 6 weeks now but ive just had injection 4 last week amd felt rough since.Im also waiting for a hysterectomy but been told 12-18 months in portsmouth qah

Also remeber everyone is different, we have spoke to people who felt amazing after few weeks of 1st injection and others that still feel awful after 7 or 8

Hello I had zoladex 3 times over the years with add back hrt. Last year I had prostap after being on zoladex for a year. Zoladex stopped working and I started bleeding constantly. Prostap lessened it but didn’t stop it. I bled for 7 months constantly and my consultant finally signed the papers for a hysterectomy last October. Sadly that went wrong and my bowel was stuck to my womb and had to be cut. It was 50/50 I’d pull through the operation. I ended up with a colostomy bag to save my life. Recovery has been long and I’m still not my old self in any way, more surgery to come to reverse the colostomy then up to a year recovery. Be aware not all doctored carry prostap, I had to order the perscription and then take the injection with me to my nurse appointment at the gp surgery, I wasn’t told this and turned up for the appointment to be asked can I have the prostap, caused delays in treatment. Good luck hope it helps you and surgery goes well

I'm on zoladex just had 4th injection. It's very similar to prostrap - both stop ovaries releasing hormones. I would say your reaction to this drug will depend on many things: your age, if you've started peri menopause symptoms, your eating and exercise habits and reaction to stress. Finally, the reason why you've been put on it - so the reason for the hysterectomy. If it's for fibroids or adenomyosis, and you're bleeding heavily then it takes time to work but can, after 3 months, give you your life back (it has for me). However, your body will have an individual response regarding menopause symptoms. This also depends on whether you are taking add back HRT or Tibilone which is a synthetic type of HRT specifically designed to help prevent bone mass loss which is connected to this drug. If you are on longer than 6 months you should take something. You should also supplement with collagen, vitamin D and K. I'd recommend as much exercise as you can manage too particularly lifting weights. Some women will react immediately to estrogen in HRT because estrogen is inflammatory for many women particularly those suffering with endometriosis on top of everything else. Some of us are on thus drug until menopause because we can't have a hysterectomy due to severe endo. It runs out early for me so I have it week 9 not 12. You must monitor your mood, sleep and eating habits. Introducing more fibre to my diet and cutting out gluten has mad a big difference for me. Nobody wants to be on this drug and I wouldn't go on it unless you're in constant pain or constantly hemorrhaging (like I do without it). However, nothing else works so you need to weigh up how much pain or blood loss you can manage whilst on the never ending waiting list. Being chronically anaemic is much worse than the side effects from zoladex. Good luck x

Hi I have been having monthly prostap injections for just over a year. I have been prescribed tibolone alongside to help with side effects.

At first it was great as it is the only thing I’ve ever had that has stopped my bleeding which used to be very heavy, frequent and for extended periods of time.

At first I had some menopause symptoms but they were manageable. The worst being the hot flushes as for me they were extremely frequent and intense but not painful so much better than dealing with the endo.

In the past 3 months however, I have been getting lots of joint and bone pain and struggling with mobility because it’s so painful. I have become like an old woman!! I am waiting on a bone density scan as prostap can affect this. I’m not saying it’s 100%the injections but some other people have had the same problems with joint pain and mobility.

I would say it helps to a certain extent but probably not good to be on it longer term as my symptoms now are worse than the endo. Not that you would necessarily have the same experience but just wanted to let you know.

Good luck with everything!

Xx

I had these before a laparoscopy about 10 years ago. I had to take some HRT as well to prevent hot sweats etc. I would say I did not feel good but it helped with the surgery as my bowel was stuck to my ovary and the procedure to free it was complicated as I had had my sigmoid colon removed in previous surgery.

I had a hysterectomy 5 years later and since then have never had any issues. I suffered with endometriosis since the age of 17. Get a good gynecologist and eat an anti inflammatory diet that definitely helped

Best wishes
