In a month or so hopefully I should be going for a laparoscopy and the doctor suggested I get the mirena coil fitted while I'm under so I was hoping anyone could share their experience with it? Does it help the endo symptoms? Does it cause lot after like labour pains?

I had mine 5 months. First 6 weeks I bled heavily non stop which was horrible ( this is normal the uterus sheds) then my periods stopped completely. ( I believe they stop or get lighter in around 2/3 rds of cases but others get no benefit) . I stopped having my painful periods which was lovely.

I had had ovary treatment in the same lap it was inserted and unfortunately I had mild niggly abdominal pain that persisted. I don't think the mirena settled quite right or perhaps was irritating the area I had treated and after 5 months I took it out reluctantly. The abdo pain vanished a week or two later. It's a shame as it's the closest I got to something almost working.

Ultimately my Endo was a large severe rectovaginal nodule threatening my bowel and the only way to help my back pain and dyspareunia was excision.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for replying. I think I'm going to try it as a lot of people like you seem to try it and if it doesnt work I'll remove it. I already get adominal pain months ago I had it constantly until I changed my diet now it just occurs now and again not sure if its due to ibs or endo so if I have pain I may be able to deal with it. Its all trail and error let hope it works for me 🤞🏻

I had a good sense by month 3 whether it was looking right for me but gave it the extra 2 months in case the pain was surgery related and period free life was nice. I had had no abdo pain pre surgery and insertion so it was pretty clear one or other was the cause.

Removal was straight forward at GP, uncomfortable but over with in a flash . There are so few treatments and GnRHs so side effect laden it seems worth a go if the risk is low and no contra-indications.

Its worth double checking for contra indications by reading the Patient Info leaflet first.

I've concluded my body type/Endo type is one that doesn't deal with hormones particularly well so i doubt I will try many more, though I am due to discuss utrogestan at my next consult.

But I see lots of posts that have sung the praises of both mirena and zoladex. The way our bodies react to each hormone treatment is just so individual and unique the only way is to try it really.

I had a mirena for a couple of years, it didn’t do much for my periods. But I found out later that they are contra indicated for ovarian cysts.... which I get. I had it removed and then was diagnosed with endo, had my daughter and then a copper iud fitted. This was fine, but made periods longer and strange. Also, seemed to reduce my sex drive, very boring, but I am sensitive to hormonal contraception.

Last week I had a lap for endo treatment and got my tubes tied (with clips) and the iud removed. I can actually feel my cervix is happier without the iud. Period not due for a couple of weeks - so will see how it is then.

I have two beautiful children and no desire for more, so this is a good solution for me.

Thank you for replying. I'm actually hoping it improves my sex life as I get so much pain I cant do it. But the fact that sex hurts so much and that I'm only 20 and not had kids yet does worry me I've heard its easier for women who have had kids. I'm going to try and if it doesnt work for me I will have it removed 🤞🏻

It sounds like it is definitely worth trying. Besides, theyre fairly simple to remove if you find it doesn’t suit you.

Best wishes

I had mine for 2.5 yrs, periods stopped but i still ovulated and knew when i was "on". I had zoladex the first 3 mth whilst it settled so that stopped my periods initially. We had it removed as we where ttc but i am lad it did come out as the plastic bits where sticking in my bowel nodulea that attched to my uterus and it have me ibs symptoms which 15 mths later i still get. Next time i am having a pill of some sort x

Thank you for the reply. I've actually tryed going on the pill and it hasnt worked for me made no difference. If it would cause me ibs symptoms I would actually be okay because I've had ibs for months before I changed my diet recently I used to get nausea and stomach ache everyday I've lost 2stone because of it. I think I'm going to try it and if it doesnt work for me I will have it removed 🤞🏻

I had Mirena and wouldn't recommend it at all. To be honest i think doctors play down the negative side effects, particularly the pain and how androgenic the hormones it releases are. It didn't sit well with me at all - ovarian cysts, weight gain around the abdomen that I couldn't shift, facial hair growth, bloating and a lot of pain (different to period pains but not better), plus moods (not so much mood swings as just terrible mood). I looked several months pregnant and it also felt like it was jabbing me during intercourse. I had it out after 6 months but the side effects lasted a lot longer. It makes much more sense for women who have had children than for those who haven't as far as I can tell from talking to others with Mirena.

Thank you for the reply. I'm going to try it as it does work for some people and if it doesnt work I will have it removed.

I had the mirena coil put in while I had my laparoscopy I think it was a better way of having it done rather than being awake. I feel like it has helped with pain in someways and has definitely made my periods lighter I would give it a try because everyone is different and it might really work for you xx
