Hi, has anyone’s periods become worse after the Mirena coil?
I’m on my second period since having it fitted, so I know still early days however my first period was on time however heavy like usual but lasted 2 weeks. Then I had a 2 week break and my second period has been here for 10 days so far and still going strong.
Feel so weak and tired 😣 appointment with consultant in Feb so will discuss with him but wanted to see others experience. X

Hi, I had mine fitted back in September after my lap my periods have got a lot lighter since having it but they definitely last a lot longer, I can bleed for 2 weeks then be off then be back on the next week.
My pain has been so so much worse then before tho. I’m thinking about getting it removed cuz the pain is consuming everything! But then I’m like I have a meeting with my new consultant in February so do I just wait it out or not it’s so hard not knowing what way to turn for the best.
Hope your periods work themselves out. Good luck xx
This is the same for me. I have the coil in and when I had my laproscopy and diagnoses I was fitted with the Mirena IUD. To start with it was hard but as the longer I had it in the longer duration between my periods were.
They are the same thing. Coil and IUD are interchangeable terms. The difference is whether its the Mirena (hormone producing) or Copper (the original metal one)
Hey girls, why don’t you guys check out Nancy Nook endometriosis education. One of the lady just mentioned and I joined the group and it had wealth of knowledge. I promise non of you will be disappointed. When signing they ask theee questions and we are not allowed to ask questions for the first week. We have to explore to understand.
It mentions about the hormone injection too. I hope this helps you. Some of us may not have been lucky but I making sure all of you can have the right info.
I'm finding the same as Xroisinellenx that mine are lighter but longer than before (16 days) and quite painful. I'm on pain killers everyday. I was still hoping it was effects of the surgery causing pain. My consultant said I wouldn't know the exact improvement from surgery till 4 months post opp. I read somewhere that the first 2 post laparoscopy periods can be really bad. I hope that means you next one is a big improvement x
Yes I had the Mirena and my periods became instantly much heavier and more painful. So bad I started passing out! I made it 6 months until I arrived in A and E again and begged them to remove it. I personally found the mini pill much more effective for my endo.
I had one fitted a few years ago, before my diagnosis. I bleed for about 8 weeks to start with. Then had a period every month for 8 months. It was agony. I had horrendous back pain and my cramps were so much worse than before.
I had it fitted as a gynae insisted I had it. He thought I may have endo but can’t be that bad.
Any way I got a second opinion had it removed, went in gnrh and had all manner of tests and a lap.
Turns out I had adenomyosis and endo!
I had a hysterectomy in August.
Don’t suffer in silence my second gynae was horrified how I had been treated and just left in pain for so long. He said you know pretty quickly if you are going to get on with a coil xx
I've had mine in for 4 months and I hate it..My periods used to be every 29-31 days and lasted about 4-5 days..Even with Endo my periods were always regular!
Since having the stupid coil put in (which I didn't want, but my consultant said would help) I can't even keep count of my periods..The pains are worse, I've been loseing stuff since the day the thing was put in, sometimes blood, other times a brown gunk (Sorry for the TMI) I've seriously had enough..And the tiredness is insane..I've got two boys and it isn't good.
I'm having real trouble waking in the morning, napping in the afternoon most days when I used to be fine and managed to get up at 6am everyday for the school run. But now..I'm missing my alarms, and when I do get up I feel like I haven't slept all night. I can't wait to get this thing out.
When I first had my Mireya coil I was advised to take the pill for a few months alongside having the coil to train my body into a cycle and stop breakthrough bleeding etc. I’ve had a mirena for years now, I had it fitted during surgery to remove endo scarring. I barely have a period now which really helps manage my symptoms.
Hi. I had the Mirena put in about eighteen months ago. I bled almost constantly for the first 12 months: a few heavy periods to start, then about 28 days of bleeding to 2 days of no bleed. Absolutely exhausting. My alternative was a hysterectomy, which I’m really scared of, but I started talking to my GP about referring me for this and then things finally started to settle, beginning with 5 days of no bleeding, up to a couple of weeks now, and light bleeding the rest of the time. The pain is very little now too, so I’m sticking with it for the time being. It’s not ideal, but better than the terrible heavy and painful periods I had before. I hope you find a solution that suits you better. Keep going back if you’re in pain!
