hi I had a laparoscopy last year in May and the surgeon said he found some spots of endometriosis and removed them I’ve always had really bad periods as a teenager they used to be so heavy I used to throw up every month and roll around in agony I couldn’t do anything the full week, I was on the pill since I was a teen and that seemed to help me but then out of nowhere I was bleeding for weeks at a time so came of it and ended up pregnant and after I had my daughter my periods were much more manageable the pain wasn’t as bad but fast forward to the laparoscopy that was because I had abdominal pain since I was pregnant down my lower right side so they done the surgery thinking it was endo but it wasn’t (I’m still suffering with the pain down there) but since that surgery my periods have been so bad they’re really heavy now and clotty and they make me feel ill and also trying to do a number 2 is agony it’s so painful😥 I said to the gynaecologist about it but she said the surgery doesn’t cause periods to become heavier or that but mines literally has she has prescribed desogestral which is the pill I’ve taken since a teen she said to give it six months and see if it’ll help she tried to get my to get the iud or something but I really don’t want any of those so trying this pill again but has anyone experienced this? also is it possible endo has grown back already as my periods are this bad I’m really struggling with it I’ve hardly been out of bed all day😓

Heavy and painful periods after laparoscopy
Hi
Sorry to hear you are suffering so much.
On one hand surgery doesnt cause heavier periods so I understand what your doc is trying to say BUT it can inadvertently cause heavy periods because surgery causes scar tissue which can then go on to affect your periods
Also, you asked whether it can come back this quick and it absolutely can come back this quick. You have been having periods, which means your hormones have gone through their cycle which means it can come back.
Also, just to add. Desogestrel stops periods for about 20% of women by stopping ovulation. This can then keep a lid on endo symptoms but if it doesnt stop your ovulation then any helping affect on your endo is a bit more limited. And if you are in the 20% but you have some endo already existing either left over from the op or that has grown since then your body will still produce oestrogen even when not ovulating (albeit different volume) and it will still affect the endo. I mention this not wanting to worry you but just so you have the info and dont get fobbed off by someone telling you its the perfect solution. Some women absolutely take it and bobs your uncle its brilliant, but there are some it either doesnt help or only helps for a while
Not saying dont have it at all, it still may very well be the best thing to try and I'll have fingers crossed for you it works brilliantly as it seems to have done in your teens but keep learning about endo and challenge any doctor that gives any "guarantees"
Good luck x
So sorry to hear this. Did you have excision or ablation? And was this with an endo specialist at BSGE centre? It just makes me suspicious you have disease lower down if you have bowel symptoms that may be missed by a regular gynae who isn’t that specialist. Also have you had MRI to rule out adenomyosis ?
