How did you feel after excision?

Hi everyone ❤️ I had excision surgery about 6 months ago for fairly severe and widespread endometriosis. The surgeon was happy with how it went and felt confident he’d removed the endo.

Before the op I suffered with pretty much daily pain (pelvic, lower back and tops of legs mainly).

I haven’t really felt much of an improvement to the pain so far. I still get pain most days, and some days very severe flare ups like I did before the excision.

Does anyone have any experience of pain following excision surgery and did it improve after 6 months, or did you not get any relief at all?

thank you xx

I’ve not had surgery but from what I’ve read, most people get some relief for a while until it grows back again. Was it a specialist?

I have got relief so far (4 months post op) but I also had pelvic floor physio with specialist in Endo and I really believe that massively helped improve things alongside the surgery. I no longer have the awful sciatic pain or bowel issues I did pre op and pre pelvic physio. I talk a bit about it here healthunlocked.com/endometr...

I found after my excision surgery in 2018 that I was in a fair but of pain afterwards but not actually throwing up all the time (yay) I believe it was nerve pain but my body couldn't tell the difference. It finally calmed down about 10mths post opp. I'd been in daily pain before the surgery to. You could ask about nerve pain medication (I didn't get on with them but we are all different) I also found seeing a physiotherapist helpful for hands on physio. Because our body goes into guarding mode due to long term pain it doesn't know how to switch off from that and overly tight muscles in your pelvis also generate pain. A womens health physio/ pelvic physiotherapist is best. I hope you get some relief soon! X

My pain was on the top of my thigh and around my back and lasted a long time after my surgery. My women’s physio said it had affected the fascia so she did specific massage on that which helped. Mine did eventually go although it comes back like a ghost pain sometimes, more irritating and like I need a good stretch. - I am almost 3 years post op.

It's great to read that you had excision surgery and that the surgeon reported that the surgery went well. I'm guessing he's an endometriosis specialist and that he was accompanied by a colorectal surgeon too? - I ask because even experienced endo surgeons need a helping hand when it comes to treating endo on neighbouring organs.

Secondly, the truth is there's no way a surgeon can guarantee the removal of all endometriosis. If you think of the size of the bowel alone, it's not possible for surgeons to go over every inch of your intestine - (I'm quoting an endo specialist here). Moreover, they have to remove endo whilst mitigating risks of damage to said organs, so it's a delicate procedure.

Lastly, it's my understanding that surgery, especially excision surgery, is king when it comes to treating symptoms. If your symptoms are more or less the same, that's cause for concern. I would request a copy of the surgery report (if you haven't already). That being said, surgery is not a cure. Have you tried alternative, holistic methods to managing your endo? I'm referring to diet & supplementation, stress management, exercise, alternative therapies, etc. If not, that would be my starting point
