Hi guys. Quick question - I’ve been invited for a cervical smear test. I had my laparoscopy about 8months ago. I was just wondering if it’s ok to have a smear test (mainly pain-wise!) or if I should wait longer?
(I might just be being a bit of a scaredy cat about it haha). Any advice would be appreciated 😀 x

hello! Just jumping on as I had this exact same thing. Definitely tell the nurse or doctor about the lap, if anything they’ll try and be a bit more gentle. But also ask if you can have the smaller size speculum. This was a game changer for me! A friend mentioned that there are different sizes which I had no idea of! Maybe take a couple of painkillers an hour or so before too. And relax. It’s so difficult I know but, otherwise it can be even more uncomfortable. Just remember it’s a few seconds and once it’s done it done.
That should be absolutely fine. I had a smear about 3 weeks after a lap once and it was no worse than it normally is (which is normally pretty painful anyway!). I always tell them that I have Endo and that smears are painful for me. I also always ask for the smallest speculum they have and that helps too.
I had a laparoscopy a year ago I was also concerned about my smear test and asked for it to be done at the same time as a hysteroscopy however they failed to collect enough cells at the time. I then went for my smear test a few months later and it was absolutely fine slightly uncomfortable but way better than I had feared.
I had a smear test at the same time as my lap under a general and best decision I made. The gyn surgeons are very pro smear tests so anything to support you having one is their attitude. Smear test came back fine.
I had a smear 3 months after mine and it was okay. As you know they are never a pleasant experience but you shouldn't experience any extra discomfort. Hope this helps
hey! I think you should be absolutely fine in regards to pain after 8 months. However saying what I have never had an issue with pain & smear tests more just discomfort.
You could always raise your concerns with your doctor ☺️
glad you asked this. I had a lap in May 22 and my smear is now due. I had a lovely locum doctor do mine last time and she (thankfully) had a specialism in women's health. She told me to push as if i was trying to poo. That's the only time i have had a smear pain free. Good luck!
