Hi anyone had both ovaries over 50 removed due to lrg endometrioma or for anything else. Consultant has said it is best option due to my age and said hormones would be low anyway (Not quite sure what to think about that???)
ovaries removed over 50: Hi anyone had both... - Endometriosis UK
ovaries removed over 50
Morning, he's referring to the fact that most women go through menopause at 51.4 (average) years of age. Also if you've been in peri menopause then your hormones have been decreasing which is why we get so many symptoms. I would have them removed and go on HRT. I know our ovaries protect us and do give hormones for life but if you have a cyst on it and it's large then I wouldn't risk leaving it; it coukd cause issues as you age. They can't get to mine as my ovary is fused to my bowel and cervix. I have an endometrioma too and I'd like it removed. Good luck x
Thank you for your reply . I thought this would be the case , not sure how easy it’s going to be for them to remove mine. As ovaries are stuck together and stuck to stump of cervix . As well as tethered to bowel.
Hi, are you under a endometriosis clinic ? Or general gynaecologist. I’m 48 had total hysterectomy with both ovaries out and cervix removed . The cervix was removed because it was attached to the bowel so that was resected and dissected .I had endometroitic mass on ureter and in utersacral ligament which I believed was removed to gain access . They did tell me due to my age I would have been low on hormones but my periods hadn’t slowed down and I had no peri menopause symptoms . He done tests but always shirked my questions on it as I was against hysterectomy but he said I had no choice . X
Hi Thank you for your reply, yes I am under a endometriosis consultant. I basically have the choice of putting up with the cyst or a hysterectomy ( I have already had my uterus taken out 6 years ago due to fibroids ) If you don’t mind me asking How were you after the operation and how long was your recovery?
Hi, the recovery was around 8 weeks , I had complications too which slowed things down ,I was advised 6/8 weeks but I found it took a lot longer for energy levels to feel normal ,for about 3/4 months any type of activity made me need to rest , I felt like I was never not going to be tired and exhausted . I’m fine now and it’s been 9months and I’m not on HRT .
Hi! I had both ovaries removed at 53. One ovary had an endometrioma approaching 13cm so that was always going to go. Removal of the other which had a few small endometriomas was optional - I got several opinions and they all recommended removing both, also my mother, grandmother and great grandmother all died by 60 so that was a worry.
I didn't take HRT because of high blood pressure and went through a stage of annoying hot flushes and bad insomnia but they seem to be fading now luckily.
I hope this helps. It's a difficult decision even close to menopause.
