Back to work

Hi everyone,

might be a stupid question but I just don’t know what to do. I had a salpingectomy on Tuesday and I am potentially back to work on Sunday (Christmas Eve) I am a hairdresser and it’s mainly blow drys and it’s 4 hours. My employer is fine if I am off but I’m putting pressure on myself. I don’t feel too bad in all honesty but is it actually unwise and could be detrimental to healing if I do go in to work on Sunday? I don’t want to do anything that can set back my recovery.

Any advice welcome.

Thank you :)

Everyone is different in their healing time but I would advise against returning to work sooner than 1 week and given you have a manual on your feet job probably 2 weeks. You want to be very careful about lifting and bending while your incisions heal. And I am still finding 3 weeks post my excision surgery that standing/being active for more than a couple of hours makes me very sore again and tired. I had a vulval haematoma develop at 6 days post surgery (probs because I was feeling better and doing too much) which hasn’t helped my recovery now, but just shows how important those first few days of being gentle on your body are. Prioritise yourself and getting better xx

Oh I’m sorry you’ve had some complications. Hope you’re feeling better now! Thanks for replying to me. Yeah I think I may be being over zealous. I rang the hospital before and they said in a job like mine they’d recommend 2 weeks. So I think I may be best to avoid it. It’s just a nightmare to let people down, but health comes first I guess xx

Hi

Don’t feel bad about taking more time off, much better to heal properly. It might not feel like it because of the size of the incisions but you’ve had pretty major surgery. Let yourself have a break

Hi

I’ve had a google and it says

“When can I go back to work?

We suggest that you stay off work for 2 to 4 weeks; this will depend on the nature of your job. Please talk about this with your consultant or GP”

If you can afford to be off work then stay off and rest. Be kind to yourself. Being on your feet will be tiring more than you think. Your GP should have no problems writing you a fit note. You could also request a change to your hours/duties (if possible in your job) on a fit note when you do go back to work to help for the first couple of weeks.

Wishing you a speedy recovery 🤞🏼

I took two weeks off after my salpingectomy and laparoscopy. I recovered well and felt great during those weeks but found that it took a while for my energy levels to get back to normal and when I went back to work I found being in a work environment very exhausting so I gradually built up my hours in the office after that. I think I realised that letting your body heal internally does take time even if you feel like you are back to your usual self. Wishing you all the best with your recovery!
