Hello everyone, I am writing as someone who has struggled with periods since puberty. When I first started my periods I was having very heavy periods that was lowering my iron causing me to have anemia. I was a very conscious school girl who was paranoid she smelt of blood and was going to leak any second. I remember even getting sent home from school due to fainting and because of leaking through two pairs of trousers. I was offered the contraceptive pill to help manage this but found this unbeneficial. Ever since my second year of university 6 years ago, my period symptoms got worse again. I get period cramps two weeks before my period and ovary aches. In my third year of uni I was rushed to hospital on my period due to having a high temperature and being unable to toilet properly and ovary pain they put it down to pancreatitis despite not being fully sure and sent me on my way 5 days letter. Ever since. Have had ultrasounds done and blood tests but nothing has come of it. I am now getting to the age where I would love to think about having children but this is daunting for me. I find when I am on my period the first day I will spot lightly, second and third day usually nothing and then 3 days very heavy and this cycle continues monthly. I also get fever like symptoms and feel like I’m having a bad flu I find that my period pains seem to interlink with general illness and un wellness. Any advice I feel like I just get fobbed off at the doctors and I am considering saving up to go private although this isn’t something currently in my budget. I also forgot to mention that I have been diagnosed with IBS however when going for a poo feel like my ovaries are lowering and feel like the problem may be interlinked but yet again I feel like the doctors don’t take this into consideration.
Advice please: Hello everyone, I am writing... - Endometriosis UK
Advice please
I take cod liver oil tablets for heavy bleeding and they seem to have helped. I think with the Doctor's it's more ignorance of the condition than anything else. It's finding that one Dr that's sympathetic to the condition.
Hi, sorry to hear you are going through this. Have you been investigated for endo? If not then maybe you should request this. Mefenamic acid has helped me with pain and bleeding but I’m not sure if you can take this if you’re trying to get pregnant. Hope things start to improve soon xx
Hey lovely. It does sound like typical symptoms of endometriosis but they unfortunately can’t diagnose it through an ultrasound or blood tests. Try and keep a diary of your symptoms and track your period just as a reflection if you do get to see a consultant. I would push for a referral to see a gynaecologist who should hopefully know more about your symptoms and the possibility of it being endometriosis than your GP, they just don’t know enough about it. I had all of the same symptoms as you when I was younger and it was only because I had a large ovarian cyst that they did a laparoscopy and found endometriosis. I think I would have still been waiting for a diagnoses had it not been for the cyst. Don’t give up, do plenty of research and track your pain and symptoms and really push for a gynae referral xxx
thank you I shall do, that time I went to the hospital and they said it was pancreatitis they also found a ovarian cyst on my left side but they were adamant it was too small to be causing discomfort. I wonder if it has grown. Xx thank you for your support.
