Bowel - Low Residue Diet Pre-Op

I have an op on 24 June and speaking to my consultant today he said that I should follow a low residue diet for 3 days prior to my op and explained it as basically liquids only. I took that to mean smoothies, soups etc. I then googled it for some ideas and it is explained as a low fibre diet so white bread, meat etc. I'm confused. Can anyone help??

Thanks!!

I would think you can eat baby puree (light coloured). I eat them before colonoscopy. Or ask your pre op nurse.

I have my op 22nd June and have been given the same diet for my colonoscopy. I have been told for Breakfast - Poached or boiled egg

lunch - boiled potatoes (peeled), steamed chicken

Also Clear jelly no idea what they mean by clear jelly and meat extract drink like bovril

Hope this helps a little, but definitely confirm with your pre op nurse.

have you been given any bowel prep? Most people follow a low residual diet for two days prior then they day before they have to drink a lot of nasty bowel prep and have no food till after surgery……that’s to clear out your bowels completely so I don’t know about just a low residual diet with no bowel prep. The hospital should of given you paperwork explaining what you can and can not eat and what you can and cannot drink plus also how to take the bowel prep. I had to do this prior to bowel surgery for endo and I’ve also had to do it for colonoscopies.

I hated that bit! They should give you specific guidance but I lived on a diet of white pasta with cheese and honey toast for 3 days.

ring her Secretary and ask her to email you a sheet for low residue diet. I had a great sheet for low residue diet before a colonoscopy.

I ate Harleys jelly and custard. Plain chicken thighs, skinless and boneless. No blackcurrant squash as it can appear like blood. White toast and salted butter, english tea with milk.

Broth like soup, no chunks. Bovril to drink. As I recall others recommending but I don’t like them. You can have plain rice too.

Hope that gives you some ideas. It’s not for long and you won’t die of malnutrition is you eat these foods.

Hope that helps you lovely ☺️

There is plenty information on line as to what are low fibre foods. Beware of White bread, check the Nutrition on all food packages. The normal level you are looking at are 2g or less of fibre per 100g. White Bread can vary between 1.8g/100g to 3.6g/100g. Fruit and Vegetables Bananas 1.4g/100g to Prunes 9.4g/100g. You just have to do you research.

I have had Crohn's Disease for the last 40 years and have been on a low fibre diet for the last few years.

Not what you're looking for?
