Is surgery usually the only option?

Hi, I have a history of Endo and possible Adenomyosis - previously had cysts and lesions removed during laparoscopy (not sure if it was ablation or excision - it was over 10 years ago & I was quite uninformed at the time). I am approaching menopause age (no sign yet) - I was hoping this would alleviate Endo symptoms but now after a few scans and consultation I'm being referred for MRI as it's suspected as quite severe (endometrioma found and several cysts).

I know the MRI will have more detail but I'm wondering what might the consequences of not having surgery but just hormonal treatment? If it involves the bowel is that an automatic referral for surgery?

It depends on your diet (I am sure you are aware that you need to follow a specific diet for endo), the natural remedies you take... but menopause changes nothing to endometriosis (that's a myth).

There isn't really any set criteria, I think decisions are made on an idividual basis about surgery. A lot of surgeons are nervous about taking on bowel surgery because it carries a lot of risks. I have extensive endo through the bowel but the docs won't operate because it is so bad they can't do much with it.

thanks for your reply Avourneen but sorry to hear of your situation! How do you manage the pain & other symptoms- is this with hormone treatments? I have to admit, even though I had one laparoscopy in my 30’s I was not aware it could affect the bowel in later years

I had a second lap about 3 years ago that seemed to help a bit but the progesterone only pill has helped most as it has shut down my periods. Without the periods the worst pain stops and I take eat prunes and take magnesuim which are kind of laxative that really helps with the bowel issues. I still have pain 24/7 but it is at a low level and I can cope without painkillers. Before the second lap I couldn't sit , drive or manage daily tasks in the house now I can do a lot more. I think the endo was very bad on my uteroscaral ligaments and that caused terrible back pain. That part of the pain stopped after the lap.

I’m researching the mirena coil & mini pill atm after discussing briefly at my consultation- sounds like the pill has really helped you. Sorry to hear you have constant pain. mine is mid cycle & period - managed with ibuprofen but pretty uncomfortable. So many on here have much worse pain :( I get severe lower back pain & stupidly just thought it was regular period pain. Thanks for the tips on what helps - I’m just not keen on surgery near the bowel but understand they will probably recommend removing the cyst
