Hi everyone ☺️I'm going for a laparoscopy next week, much sooner than expected. I have been recommended to have the mirena coil inserted during my surgery but im undecided. Did anyone with experience of this find it beneficial?

hi! I was asked if I wanted the mirena coil fitted minutes before my operation. I quickly asked what the benefits would be, & the surgeon told me it would stop me bleeding & therefore decrease the amount of endo build up. Made sense to me, so I went for it. It took 9 months for my periods to completely stop. Figured I had nothing to loose 👍 x
I realise it doesn’t work for everyone but for me it was the best decision I ever made. I’m now on my third and it gave me my life back. Hope it’s positive for you.
I ended up having Mirena inserted during my surgery in August after years of saying No. The only benefit I have had is no bleeding - I bled for about a month straight post-surgery and then nothing. However, I do get pain with it - in fact, more than before. Still debating whether to have it out because the bleeding was a problem before and is a blessing it’s stopped but wondering if it’s worth the pain. Bonus of having it in with surgery, you don’t have to worry about potential insertion pain/issues.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
I am so sorry to hear this and have had a similar experience. IUD really seems to be very hit and miss... but I knew in my bones it wasn't right for me and let a gynae push it. I have had it in for 3 years to try and stop the spread of suspected endo, recent mri seems to back that up... but I am not the same person I was in 2020 pre iud. I had mine put in in a clinic so I am also traumatised from insertion and want it removed while sedated. My ovary is potentially stuck to my womb and the pain of that was somehow more manageable than iud cramps... 😢 it did stop my back pain and bleeding tho x
Hi, i have it along with a progesterone only pill. Im still spotting 7 months later but my pain has basically stopped. I will say it was the most painful thing having it inserted, worse than having my children! So if you want it definitely get it done while you are asleep x
I’m in for a lap next week too! Good luck!
I had the coil fitted and it did nothing for me just caused more pain and more bleeding! Had it removed.
Hope your surgery went okay!
I had a coil fitted about 4 months before surgery. I had my surgery three weeks ago. The first month with the coil was absolutely terrible, pain was way worse and had terrible nausea which was a new symptom. Consultant told me that it was because for the first month or so the womb is literally trying to eject the foreign body out of it. Started taking a progesterone pill alongside it which calmed the symptoms a lot.
During surgery they replaced the coil because they had to take it out to perform the surgery. I was worried that it might start the process over but I’ve had no pelvic pain at all since and prior to surgery I had pelvic pain every day. So if you did go for it, be aware that it will take time to settle. I seriously considered taking it out but I’m personally feeling glad that I waited a few months to see if things would improve!
