How long do your periods last?

Hello, I’m just wondering how long people last on their period, I suffer really bad especially recently since I had laparoscopy done 3 years ago, I’ve never been regular with my periods since I was 13 years old I am now 30 I can go months sometimes a year without a period I ain’t on anything as my gynaecologist told me to stay away from all contraception due to making me worse with pain when I finally to get a period I am in severe pain and I bleed really heavy to the point I have to change every 20/30mins, I’m also loosing a lot of clots and they are bigger than what they should be, I have been to the docs and back and forth with my gynaecologist and they gave me transemicacid tablets to stop the period but no longer take effect, so far I have been on now nearly 10 weeks, this is the worst I have ever been and I’m fed up, I feel like no one understands how I feel especially my partner, has anyone else been this way?

Hi there,

My periods used to last 3 weeks, stop for 2 then last 5 weeks then stop for a week or so and repeat. Nobody in real life outside of here understands the pain and the exhaustion and the clots the size of my thumb as a teenager. My step dad was the worst for torturing me. Nurses the last couple years are worse. I'm due my next depo last week. But the nurses are so awful resisting giving me the shot it pulls me into a dark place going to the surgery. As for a partner I can't help. I was with a couple guys turned on by my pain. Looking back, I think my step dad was the same.

I'm sorry I can't be more help but I hope that answers your question about periods and a bit about someone else's clots.

My periods have always been bad, but got worse over the last five years, then July last year got worse, I'm lucky if I get a week off now before they start again, I have large clots and flooding too. They gave me transamatic acid but I'm only allowed it for four day's day's it has helped a little, I've just been prescribed nortesderone which I'm picking up today. A constant who did an internal scan asked why I hadn't been given this month's ago. But I'm getting it now. At my scan they said I have adenomyosis, signs of endometriosis, fibroids, cysts and a polyp. I've had various tests and procedures over the last few months and I'm currently waiting for gynecology to get in touch to discuss my options. So no your not alone in this and it's truly horrendous. I'm my daughter's carer so it's driving me crazy. Sending a big hug x

Hi,Just to say I really feel for you. It's so hard to try and explain to someone else that's not been through it.

I've had a hysterectomy now and it really was the bleeding that made my final decision. Pain was unbearable but I got trapped in house some days I bled so much. My periods were always at least 10 days. I started with small clots but eventually they were the size of my palm. Before my hysterectomy I bled every day for 2 years it was probably heavy and clotty for 5 or 6 days, heavy bleeding for another week then light for rest of time but bleeding everyday just gets to you.

I'd be same as you. Need night time sanitary towels, change every 20 mins sometimes more if flooding. I resorted to a large child's nappy under my 2 night time sanitary towels. And I'd have to also put towels down on my sofa and on my bed.

Sometimes if a friend offered me a lift I'd be worried to get in their car incase I flooded and ruined their seat.

My husband has always been really good but I started making him look at all the clots so he could see how bad it really was. I tried to be really honest with everyone too even though it can be embarrassing. I still think most people struggle to really get it, I had the odd friend say why can't you come swimming, just use a tampon!

I do think people try and understand.

I did have 18 months when I had mirena iud and that got rid of periods which was a big relief but then it dislodged due to heavy bleeding and I couldn't have another.

I wish I could say something that would really help xx

thank you, I have asked for a hysterectomy but they’ve declined it due to my age even tho I don’t want anymore children and I’ve been with my partner 14years even tho I have told them it’s interfering with all life aspects, I am the same I hate leaving the house incase I do one wrong move and I’ve leaked everywhere, it’s come to the point now where I am fed up of it the whole feeling exhausted and in pain and not being able to do much when I do have these bad do’s I don’t get them often my periods it seems to be between every 6-12months but when I do it’s bad and painful and the clots I feel like my organs are falling out and people around me just think I am being lazy, have you been better since your hysterectomy?
