endomitrioma-6cm. Consultant suggests watchful waiting rather than surgery.

recently had endometriosis confirmed via mri scan. I also have 6cm endomitrioma. This was found during a routine scan that went on to be investigated via the MRI.

I’m 45, and I think perimenopausal. Consultant says menopause will be my friend in terms of endometriosis as it will stop growing.

Because I have minimal pain, only at period times consultant says he recommendeds having another mri in 3 months to see if it has grown.

he says he will do a laparoscopicy now and remove ovary and have a general tidy up. He said this would be primarily to ease my mind as my mental health is suffering. His recommendation is to monitor and leave everything as it is.

I wondered what other consultants have said regarding endomitriomas. Of what size?

Have they recommended removal or monitoring only?

Hi,

Last year i had a 9cm endometrioma removed from my left side. I had the 'watch and wait' approach for over a year until it had grown to that size and was causing me daily pain. They also removed most of my left ovary but could not get it all as it adhered to my bowel and no bowel surgeon present.

Fast forward to now and i have another one back on my left side which is 5cm. Causing daily pain again. Also one on the right which i get no pain at all but is 4cm.

I am again on the watch and wait. I have a scan tomorrow to see if they have grown further.

I think it is pretty standard to wait for a bit before they do surgery.

Hopefully for you it doesnt grow anymore and the menopause helps your endo 🤞🏼

Hallo, if he’s doing a lap anyway, why wouldn’t he remove the cyst? The last one I had grew to 6cm and burst, resulting in an emergency lap. The problem with leaving it is the risk of it bursting (an extremely painful and potentially dangerous experience) and/or pushing your organs out of the way, making it harder for medics to scan you, or even operate. I don’t get his logic of leaving it!

hi, I had a 4cm one and he said it was best to remove. I had a lap in may where they also found severe endometriosis. I’m also 45 and thought I was peri menopause because of night sweats, but these have gone since getting the cyst removed. Also I had achingly in my groin, hip and legs and awful bloating which has gone too!

I had a 6cm one removed a week ago, it also looked like it leaked and they found plenty of other endo around my organs so I am being put on GnRH medication soon and then probably more surgery needed at a later date.

I’m sure your surgeon knows what they’re doing but my understanding is anything over 6cm (at most) warrants removal. Perhaps being peri-menopausal means it won’t grow any further? I know what you mean about the mental health effects- that was the worst part of mine, being in constant moderate pain = constant anxiety that it was going to burst!
