Hi Ladies,

Just got back from my hospital appointment I was scheduled for a hysterectomy in December but at the appointment it’s been pushed back to the new year due to a backlog. My consultant suggested I have my ovaries out instead of a full hysterectomy and I’m not sure what to do really have any of you ladies had this operation and how did it help your endometriosis? Thanks for reading my dilemma if I’m honest operations scare the crap out of me xx

Hi! I'm really sorry that everything has been switched on you - it's horrible getting your head around something and then it all being confused!

Did your consultant explain why the sudden change?

I'm also having a total hysterectomy soon (although mine is because of adeno and not my endo) so know how much mental energy it takes to get your head around agreeing to the op in the first place!

Xx

Having a full hysterectomy is a major operation (I’m currently 3 months into recovery). I suppose if your uterus looks healthy he is suggesting a much easier operation? Only my thoughts.

Hi how is your recovery going ? xx

It’s going well but has been slow. I still have a swollen belly due to inflammation. I’ve just gone back to work on a phased return (3 months off) and I’m really tired in the afternoons. Recovery does seems to be very individual partly based on type of surgery and your medical history. I had a vertical incision along the scar where I had had a fibroid removed previously so I’m presuming that is why that area is taking a while. I also had full hysterectomy plus ovaries plus endo removal including on the bowel.

Hi,Thanks for your reply I think the sudden change is due to a backlog of operations and covid 19. I have adenomyosis as well but the consultant said if he takes the ovaries out it will stip the uertus from causing pain!! I am confused what to do as i didn't get on at all with the HRT and prostrap injections. I have a few months to think about it, May I ask how old you are? I'm 41 . Do you have a date for your operation? i wish you a speedy recovery xx

Hi!

My understanding of adenomyosis (and I'm no Dr, so could be wrong!) is that it's in the muscle of the uterus - so removing the ovaries wouldn't stop that pain because it's already there!

And for endo, unless it's all removed at the same time then (again!) removing the ovaries wouldn't stop it growing - so it feels like an odd choice!

How do you feel about the change of decision?

My hysterectomy is booked for December - I'm counting down the days now! I appreciate its not a 'cure' as such for endo, but I'll be glad to get rid of the adeno that's causing so much pain!

Hi ya, My understanding is that the endometriosis is fuelled by the hormones oestrogen so my consultant said to me so if they take the endos out along with the ovaries that make the hormone there shouldn't be any to make ( im just going by what the consultant said !!). I don't know what to make of the decision really as it took me a long time to get my head a round the full hysteremany I just want what is best for my body my concerns are the risks later in life like bone loss im a small girl anyway and coping with menopause as i don't do very well with HRT so would have to do it naturally my consultant said i would age alot faster not sure if he is trying to put me off ( my husband thinks he is just delaying things because the NHS are backlogged with operations). May i ask how old you are? did you have a vaginal operation with keyhole? Has it made your pain alot easier? how are you coping with menopause sorry for all the questions xx

I'm 35 - it will be done keyhole and removed vaginally. I'm hoping to keep my ovaries (or at least one - as one looked a bit questionable!)

If you have your ovaries removed you'll go in to menopause, so hopefully by keeping one/both I won't go in to menopause immediately and need HRT!

If you have adeno then your pain won't go if only the ovaries and endo are removed - so you'll likely end up having the hysterectomy further down the line!

Really then maybe its just best to have the whole lot out instead of more operations in the future. Sorry i got confused I thought you already had the operation. I do wish you a speedy recovery. Do you have endos as well ? Did they do a 6 month Prosrap injections with you first to see if it took the pain away ?

Yeah, I have endo as well. I had excision of endo in September, which is when I was diagnosed with adeno, so the hysterectomy was booked in as I already have the mirena coil and it clearly hasn't made any difference!

Nope, I haven't had any prostrap injections - my consultant was keen to move as quickly as I wanted to in order to releive my symptoms as the pain is awful, and my uterus is twice as big as it should be currently!

Xx

Oh that's awful for you twice the size. mine isn't bigger its just on the right hand side it feels like I'm being stabbed in the stomach its horrible. I had a copper coil and made no difference either. I'm currently taking painkillers daily to try and manage did they give you anything to manage the pain until you have surgery in Dec? I do hope it relieves all the pain for you, you will be a new woman after xx
