does anyone know how much notice they give you for surgery? I’m on the waiting list which I was put on in June and my consultants said 4-6 months I’ve recently started a new job and they arnt aware of the operation yet I was just wondering how much notice you get? Thanks in advance

I just posted about this too. I was put on the waiting list in July and was told "within 3 months". I was getting worried about notice because of work and childcare so I chased it up today and was told "You're only on week 8, there are people on the list on week 44, you shouldn't have been told it would be within 3 months". So now I just don't know what to do.

He said 4-6 months then I thought now with the strikes it will probably be longer but I’ve checked online for my hospital and it say 17 week wait for gynae treatment so I just don’t know but I’m gonna have to tell them it’s coming at some point and they have no clue as of yet!

hello, I’ve been on a waiting list for a year now in Nottingham but I think it depends on your local trust. I think normally with ops you get a few weeks notice as they would need to do the pre op too x

I’m based in Scotland. I waited 7 months just for a consultation and am now on a list and can expect to wait 12-18 months! It’s a dire situation all round. Good luck x

I wasn’t referred by my GP as I had a burst ovarian abscess 18 month ago so I had emergency surgery then from there I’ve been monitored as a cyst came straight back. It’s confusing me even more as I work in the NHS so know about some pathways etc but I don’t know where I am on the pathway either as I’ve been on surveillance for 18 months. When I asked he did say 4-6 months so I’m hoping it will be. I have got to have a large endometria removed along with being ‘cleaned up’ and ablation so I also don’t know how far up the urgent list I am either!

It depends on where you are but also the impact of the strikes has to be taken into consideration. I chased up where I was on the list the other week to make sure my calculations were correct. I was 47 weeks at the time and previously told the wait was 50 weeks for a date. They told me that due to the effect the strikes were having, it’s now a 60 week wait for a date. The surgery I had last year was a 66 week wait and that was without strikes and a simple laparoscopy - nothing other than a look and Mirena put in!

I was put on the waiting list in January then in May my consultant asked for me to be on the urgent list as my symptoms had got a lot worse, I heard at the end of August that my date was 15 Sep, so I’m going in on Friday. I don’t think they give much notice so maybe best to say to your employer that you are on the waiting list just so they know.xx

I’d say start the new job and then a few weeks in you could say you have seen a consultant who’s recommended surgery within the year.. but I’d expect that 4-6months to be an underestimation definitely . I was told 3-6months back in December 2022 and it’s now going into month 10 .. hoping op will be before end of year as just got pre op date .You can’t put your life on hold for it , but I guess let employers know that 6m to a year down the line you’ll be off work . But if they are good employers they will understand and you should get full sick pay by then I hope . They should give people realistic time frames as we all have lives to plan around this . Good luck I hope it’s soon for you!

I work in the nhs (corporate) so I get sick pay which is good and I was thinking I’m going to do that. They know I’m under surveillance m/ follow up as I had to have a occupational health check so at least it’s there anyway. I’ve been there a couple of weeks so I though I’m on holiday beginning of October so I will come back and say I’ve had a follow up and I will be having surgery then that’s the best way they are aware.

My pain is getting so much worse so I’m going back to my gp again so it’s on record, I used to work in a Gp surgery and one of them told me to keep going to your GP as pain changes etc so it’s on record for the hospital to see and bring forward if that makes sense. Just a tip as I know I just carried on suffering thinking oh I’m having the operation it’ll be better then but now I just go when anything changes then I have the back up there if it comes to it to get it sooner

It'll probably depend on the hospital. I was speaking to the admissions team at my hospital yesterday & they've currently only got the lists up until end of October, so are unable to book November & December ops yet. I think I had just under 2 months notice last time, although I was offered a cancellation appointment at a weeks notice, which I turned down because it was only 9 days after my diagnosis & I wasn't ready! Best thing to do is to speak to admissions.

I waited 16 months before I got it expedited and had a lap within 10 weeks as an emergency as i was in so much pain. I'm now waiting on a hysterectomy which is another 18month wait even after being expedited. It is different county to county 😞

Hi, I've been on the waiting list since last August. In scotland it's around 2yrs. I'm also on the cancellation list. Hopefully it's quicker in England.

Depends on the hospital if your on an urgent list the can phone you at s few days notice most of the time if in ordinary list you get up to 2 weeks notice.
