I wonder if anyone can feedback on their recovery from a total (open) hysterectomy? I have finally controlled symptoms from my 3 fibroids via Decapeptyl injections but still getting sporadic light bleeding and am unable to take any hrt as it makes the fibroids grow and press into my bowel and cause pain. The pain stops after stopping hrt but mri confirms they are constricting bowel and bladder. I have been offered a date for the op but as my symptoms are much better I am weighing relative risks. Am inclined to go ahead with the op so I can then resolve things fully and take hrt to avoid osteoporosis. I am 49. Be great to know how others weighed up the pros and cons of open surgery and if anyone had side effects from the ops and how recovery went. Thankyou!

Hi Jlg, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy a couple of years ago due to very large fibroid and high risk of it returning if removed separately. I was 42 and so had to weigh up that menopause was a way off still. Zoladex injections weren’t shrinking fibroid. Everyone’s circumstances are so unique so can’t really advise in terms of that but can tell you what recovery was like. I have had other surgery before, however this was a longer recovery and quite painful. You will need to ask sure you get support for first 2 weeks at least and then you may be off work 2-3 months. You will be fine, it is just such a gradual, slow process to not feel pain. Once healed you will feel great. I haven’t had any problems since and it’s amazing to not have really heavy periods. My bladder is less urgent too without the pressure. I hope all goes well for you 🤗

Thankyou so much for sharing your experience. Glad to hear your recovery went well, if gradual. All the best!
