Laproscopy advice and healing

Hello,

I've just been given the call I've waited months for! I have a date, a month from today for a laproscopy 🙂. This is my first ever one, to try and get a diagnosis.

Any advice for the laproscopy and healing process? I've read already to make sure to take a pillow for the travel home, plenty of entertainment for the day and pads for potential bleeding.

I have my best friends wedding 5 days after the operation-is it likely I'll be able to attend-even if its in a wheel chair?

Thank you 💞

Heyy, I recently recovered from my laparoscopy in March 2022. I just turned 18 and had to go through to process on my own and it is a little bit scary but all the nurses and doctors are there to help and they are usually lovely.

I got a blood test done during the pre-op, it’s usually over with quick. On the day I waited a couple hours so bring a book or download some movies on your phone. You’ll have to do a urine test and I’m sure the surgeon will come and talk to you and you’ll sign some papers. I was then walked to the theatre, I got onto the operating table and took all my clothes off only wearing the apron. They stuck a needle in my arms and put a mask on my face and in a few seconds I was out like a light, next thing I know I’m blinking and I’m in another room. The anaesthetic made me very drowsy but I wasn’t panicking at all, i did have some nasty shoulder pain because during the surgery they pump your stomach full of gas and it gets trapped which can be very painful.

I got very nauseous from the shoulder pain but my stomach was completely fine, it was sore and ached a little but I was up and walking a couple hours after waking up. If you’re nauseas they’ll give you warm peppermint water and ginger biscuits.

Although you won’t be able to poop for a couple days and it hurts, but you need at LEAST two weeks to recover. It took me about 3. If you’ve got work or school take it a day at time because if you strain too much by walking long distances and not giving your body enough time to rest like I did you’ll be bed bound for another week. Just make sure you’ve got a good support around you and can make food trips for you.

Goodluck for your op, hopefully it all goes well and you’ll be back to normal routines!

I highly doubt you’ll make it to the wedding, I think a small appearance would be nice but the travel might not be a good idea because of bumps and moving around a lot. You’ll have to judge it based on the trip home from the hospital and if you can manage it.

I was up and driving 3 days later and working 4 days later, yes it was a little uncomfortable but it was manageable.. everyone’s different so just base it on how it goes! Hope all goes well 🥰 xx

Hi - great news that you’ve got your procedure lined up!

I had my laparoscopy exactly 2 weeks ago, but mine was for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment at the same time.

My main advice would be:

- LOADS of peppermint tea to help with gas pain. I literally drank bucket loads but still had a lot of gas pain (I think because I didn’t move around as much as i could have done). My gas pain was in my ribs, just under my breast area and collar bone / shoulder area so don’t be alarmed if you get pain in these areas (I knew it was gas pain but still worried it was a heart attack 😂😂).

- As soon as you’re able to move, move as often as you can (even if it’s just from one side of the room to the other) to help with gas pain, but listen to your body and don’t overdo it - it’s not a race.

- If you can, try doing something nice a few days before (I went down to the coast), as it really helps clear your head, even if it’s something small.

- Take Vaseline - your lips will be really dry after the general anaesthetic

- Make sure you have a nightie - you won’t really feel like wearing trousers with a waist band for a while, so a nightie is perfect.

- Drink lots of water regularly to help get your bowels moving as best as possible.

- Rest as much as you can the week before your procedure to get your body and mind as prepared and relaxed as possible!

- Be kind to yourself - don’t expect too much too soon. Honestly the progress you’ll see within just a couple of weeks is amazing, but it’ll only happen if you don’t push too hard too soon.

- Download loads of tv / make a list of shows to watch!

All the best! X
