Hi all, my first post here - I'm 47 and suffering with extremely heavy periods, flooding, passing big clots etc. Just had an ultrasound and transvaginal probe which has shown everything is normal. I know I should be pleased but still don't have any answers as to what is causing this. I've been taking Tranexamic acid as prescribed by the GP, and she is now suggesting that I can't get a referral to see a gynecologist until every option has been explored - this being to have the coil or to take the pill. In my mind these don't give me any answers they are just a sticking plaster over the problem - anyone else having the same problems? Don't want to have a coil as have had adverse reactions to some birth control tablets before, also not sure its a good idea to be having birth control at my age just to lighten my periods because my GP doesn't want to refer me. I have also read that endometriosis is not found unless you have a laparoscopy - it can't be found with the tests I've had done. Is it worth me challenging my GP's decision?
Advice and help please: Hi all, my first... - Endometriosis UK
Advice and help please
Absolutely yes challenge this decision! If she won’t refer you see someone who will. Good luck and be prepared to challenge professionals as it can be a long process..
Hi love! Yes you're absolutely right, going on the pill with no answers really is like sticking a plaster on a broken arm and hoping that it heals on its own! Yes you're also spot on that endometriosis rarely (very very occasionally I've heard some people say they've had it show up) shows any endometriosis, my gynecologist said this is because looking for endo is like searching for a scab on the inside...it can hide between things and be totally invisible! So please don't think a clear ultrasound means you are fine, it can be quite the opposite. All my scans are clear and I'm waiting for a lap now with my BSGE registered endometriosis specialist. My advice babe, if your GP wont listen and you're able to then I would go private with a really good gyne! I found mine on the BGSE register and he has an NHS list so he's now treating me as an NHS patient after my first private appointment. It's really worth doing if you're able! If not definitely push your GP, these symptoms are not normal and taking the pill is not a cure all. It might reduce symptoms but they will return once you come off contraception. Mine have and I refuse to be on contraceptives my whole life too! Keep pushing babe, you're not alone and we have your back xxx
Hi dear. So sorry to hear about your symptoms. I have struggled with endo for years. Nothing ever showed on scans and even physical exam was ok. Mine was diagnosed on a laparoscopy. So definitely its worth challenging your GP. The whole point of a diagnostic laparoscopy is see whats wrong. Make sure its done by a specialist who knows what they are doing. All the best! Hope you are heard and find some relief to your symptoms! x
