I’m getting my Mirena coil replaced today as it’s been over 5 years since my first one. It’s been like night and day for me on the coil, no periods, minimal pain, even found it easier to keep weight off. My question is, has anyone found after getting their coil replaced it didn’t work as effectively or did it just remain the same?
Not looking forward to getting the new one in, was nauseous as anything the first time!

My Mirena came to an end a year ago, when I went to get it replaced, the clinic didn't have it available, instead they replaced it with the Kyleena, a smaller and supposedly lower hormone dosage IUD. It was terrible, I had it removed and have been IUD since. I believe lots of professional gloss over the other side effects of the IUD including anxiety, brain fog and depression. When my body was IUD free it finally felt more normal again and like a cloud had been lifted.
I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety most of my life on and off contraceptives, but the pain from my endometriosis is just too much and the coil has almost stopped that completely. For me, because the pain has stopped it’s made my mood better. I have friends who have felt terribly mental health wise on contraception and I certainly did when I was on the pill and being told to have no breaks. I agree they do gloss over it, although it’s not affected me badly in that way, I know it’s not the same for all. I’m glad you’re feeling better!
Hello there, did the coil help you while having Endo, I have adenmyosis and the pain is awful I have an appointment about discussing the coil but I want to have a mass removed first … just curious
My periods were always very heavy, ridiculous pain, thigh pain, headaches. hyperventilating and being sick etc. I know it’s not the same for everyone but the coil pretty much stopped my periods, if I do have a bit of abdominal pain I take paracetamol and it’s fine, never would have been enough before.
I just wished it worked as well for everyone else!
The Mirena change gave me energy as it is more hormone on it. As I guess it wears off over time (assumption here). So I have had 3 in from 2007 - 2021.
I always took pain meds before I went to get them changed, ibuprofen and remember it’s over quickly if you relax and trust the Dr. Just breathe through it!
Lighter periods, 3 days and only needed a panty liner 😃😃😃 No pain and it gave me so much freedom after my lap and ablation and menopause injections. Felt like a new woman 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
I only had paracetamol in the house before I went to my appointment, ooft I forgot how unpleasant it is and she found it difficult to find my cervix, they always do. But I walked round the corner home, made up a hot water bottle and went to bed for 2 hours 🤣
I love that both times I’ve had it inserted there’s been a nurse there just to hold my hand and talk me through it.
I’ve had a bit of bleeding today and yesterday but not fresh blood.
I’m so glad it’s helped you too as it’s honestly been the best thing to happen to me. ❤️
I’m so glad it’s been the best thing to happen for you.
Aww the nurse to hold your hand is so lovely 💗👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Yay for your GP surgery or wherever! Go with the paracetamol…whatever works for you!
Going to bed is a great self care move and well….brilliant job!!
Honestly no periods was life changing with the Mirena. I had decided in my mind I was having this and was gonna dig in until it was inside me. No more contraceptive pill that I could forget and get pregnant with….this was in and easy.
Mostly okay some discomfort but with Endo so many painful examinations and used to them. This was over and done so so quickly!!
So so pleased for you! Well done 👏🏻 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
I am 55 and have been a long term IUD (Mirena) user and was a avid fan. Of course, I would have it changed as soon as it “expired.” I don’t recommend long term use of an iud for this reason… I recently contracted a rare bacteria called Actinomyces. It can happen with iud use. My iud had to be removed immediately and was administered IV antibiotics through a picc line daily for 6 weeks. Since then, I’ve been on antibiotics 3x a day for 3months. 😩 I am now awaiting to hear results of an additional report from my gyno dr. Not sure what other damaged has occurred. This is a great forum and I know everyone will help you discern what is best for you.
That is terrible, I’ll definitely be vigilant on any abnormal pain or bleeding in future, which may be hard as I spent years thinking the pain I was in was normal period pains. Thank you for making me aware of what you’ve been through, I like to know the good and the bad, I don’t want to make people think the coil will work the same for everyone xx
