Mirena Coil

Could anyone give me some advice about mirena coil. I’ve been offered that or prostap injections and I’m unsure which one is better. I have endo and adenomyosis. I get quite bad migraines when my hormone levels are raised and I’m worried about the mirena coil as it releases hormones all the time. Any advice welcome.

Hi I hope you are well i had the mirena coil for about 6 years and I had no problems with it no side effects and it helped control the bleeding not so much the pain though 😕 I would maybe talk to your specialist and see which one would be more suitable for you or maybe do some research on both the coil and the injections see which one is better for you xx

Hi I have mirena for four years. I was concerned about headaches because I used to take a pill when I was younger which caused me migraines but I didn’t have this issue with mirena. I had other symptoms such as pain or cramping until my body got used to it. My gynaecologist explained that for endo purposes it’s great because it releases the hormones exactly to where they should be. But everyone is different, speak to your doctor. Wishing all the best xxx

Hi Claire, I get hormonal migraines with the endo and was offered the Mirena by one specialist, however, after speaking to 2 others it was resolved that it would only make things worse for me. I chose to avoid all hormone therapy as a result. I also have a sensitive cervix where even a pap smear gives me Braxton hicks contractions for about a day after... So it would depend. Some swear by it but do your research, it might not be right for you and ONLY you know if it is or not. Also, check the studies... synthetic progesterone converts to, or acts like, a type of pseudo estrogen. So if you are estrogen intolerant like me, which is the cause of my migraines and endo rapid regrowth and return following 2 surgeries in a year, then check it out. Everyone should always do their own research and do what is best for them because everyone IS different. :) Good luck sweetie.

After having zoladex (once for six months and later two years) and various ops I had a mirena coil and for me it was the best thing I ever did. Gave me a regular life back. I know it doesn’t work for everyone but I have only positive things to say about the mirena. Took a while to settle down but the change in pain was significant. x

Hi Claire, as someone else has already said, only you can decide what is best, talk with your specialist and even your GP, see what their opinion is. I can't say anything regarding the injections as I haven't had them, but for me, the mirena has worked wonderfully well. It took a good 9-10mths for everything to settle down, but I don't get much pain at all and haven't had a period for well over a year now. I do still get a dull ache, much like I used to get with my period before I got endo, which can be more noticeable some days than others and seems to be related to what I've eaten, but that I can cope with (most of the time).

Only you can decide which is the best one for you, so do your research, speak to your specialist. Some have tried the mirena and it hasn't worked for them so they've had it removed and tried something else, so there's no reason you couldn't try both.

Hope your decision works for you and you see an improvement in your symptoms.

Xx

I’ve got the mirena coil fitted in 3 weeks ago and tbh I haven’t had any side affects except cramping pain.

Hi Claire, I can’t comment on the mirena but I am on Prostap/Zoladex. It’s perfect as a permanent solution for me because I’m a bit older and don’t/can’t have children. There are some scary stories out there about Prostap so I just want to reassure you that some of us are happy with it. However, you really need to consider your own situation- your age, do you already have kids or do you want any/more, your hormonal/physical/emotional reactions etc. And then monitor yourself for any changes. Remember that you can stop either of these things any time you want and try something else if it doesn’t work out. Good luck!

I used to take the injections. They're worse than the mirana coil. The side effects are horrendous. I felt then within half an hour of taking them. Hot flushes, weight gain, mood swings etc.

I've had the mirena coil for three years and it's much better. Although I have gained some weight from it which I never had before. There are some side effects but Nothing compared to those injections.

I am 20 and also have endo and ado and I’m currently having the prostap injection and I absolutely hate it, I have the most horric migraines and my pain is actually worse since having it and I’ve gained lots of weight. I am only 1 month into it and I honestly wish I had never bothered. I know that there are positive results however I am not enjoying it! X
