So I had a positive test from the doctors for BV but was prescribed fluconazole (which I’m unable to take for other health reasons). The doctor then prescribed canesten pessary and cream thrush treatment (which I am also unable to take due to ongoing bleeding). Is it normal to be given thrush treatment for BV? Why would I be given anti fungal treatment for a bacterial infection? Any insight would be amazing!
Thanks x

No, it’s not normal! There is, however a gel that can reset the acidity of your vagina to allow good bacteria to thrive and bad bacteria to die, which will help your bv problem! It can be bought over the counter...I wouldn’t be concerned about the bleeding.. No doubt it’ll make treatment less effective, but shouldn’t stop it from working...
As your post suggests, it’s a male dr who probably shows little to no interest in female health hence the wrong treatment!
Thank you so much! I’m glad it’s not me going crazy! I’m so fed up of male doctors not knowing ANYTHING and being so dismissive. Thanks for the advice, I’ll look into that gel xx
Hello,Sorry to hear this, sounds grim. I’ve suffered from thrush and BV for years but haven’t had to take any treatment for 2 years as I have discovered something called Optibac (can get on Amazon) it works by balancing the intimate flora and Bacteria. It is extremely expensive sadly but I can honestly swear by it. I used to get thrush with a period and it would take me months to get rid. To cut cost a bit other ladies have found taking an Optibac for the week before and week after my period works. This works for me too, or sometimes I just take a tablet every other day and this keeps me healthy.
What nonsense! You’re right to trust your instincts. I’ve had chronic thrush in the past but last few years more Regularly BV especially the months post coil and it’s horrid I hate it so much. I use the over counter gel for the full week course but if it’s not gone they’ve prescribed antibiotics I think before.
Thanks, I went back to the GP and they have me antibiotics, which was a relief, but no mention of a gel or why they gave me the wrong medication :(. Does the coil increased bv/thrush then? I was thinking about getting it after the implant x
It can do but usually only in the 3-6 months after. It’s been great in reducing my period and while I get most my other endo symptoms still cyclically my period itself is light and one day compared to seven very heavy days it is without it. I’ve had it for a number of years now and while one moved position and had to be replaced early it was still worth it. I have the Mirena. FYI they have to remove it to do a full laparoscopy so they can see around etc but replaced it with a new one during the op and while under general so that was fine but has just meant BV alongside recovery but expected for me
