Hi everyone, I have been diagnosed with endometriosis for 2 years now and got the mirena coil fitted during my lap. I’m currently thinking about getting my coil removed and either going back on the pill or just having a natural cycle for a few months. I was just wondering if anyone has come of contraception or whether this had helped in away for some people. Before I got the coil my pain was mostly around the time of my periods with them being really painful and really heavy but now while I no longer have a period I am in pain everyday. I have discussed with my doctor last month and she said I have to discuss it with the gynae when I see him in February. Any experiences relating to this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance x

Natural cycles with endo
Hi, I had a bad experience with the Mirena coil years ago, constant pain from the start and ended up having it removed. If you want it removed, GP should be able to do it or I had it removed at the Family Planning Clinic as my GP was unhelpful. Apparently it works well for many women, but not all by any means
I’ve had it in for 2 years now and the first year was completely fine periods stopped, no pain whatsoever and then the past year I’ve just been in constant pain. I spoke to my GP about removing it and she said that COs it worked for the first year with no pain then it wouldn’t be anything to do with the coil but if I want it removed then I’ve got to speak to my gynae when I have my appointment in February as there’s a backlog of people waiting with the virgin care sex clinic due to the first lockdown and stuff so I wouldn’t be a priority anyway so best to wait till I see gynae
I haven’t tried it, just remember you know your body and how you feel more than they do 🙂
Thank you! I’ve been on some form of contraception for 5 years and just want a break but I also remember what my periods were like before and how heavy/ painful they were- the coils completely stopped my periods for the last 2 years and I don’t think it’s right me not having a period at all
I’m sure GP’s can, they can also contact your gynae if they want to double check. Maybe speak to a different GP or nurse, is there someone that you know is more helpful. A GP once told me you have to push for things as they get so busy and lots of paperwork. I get this, but as a patient it makes you feel lousy.
I’m just gonna go off what my GP said she’s been the most helpful throughout everything it wasn’t until my old doctor left and she took over that I even got referred on and she did it straight away so I trust what she says. It’s not a huge bother to me like I can wait until February for it removed it was just a thought in my head as my pain before was only one week a month (when had period) but now it’s all the time( first year of coil was completely pain free so I don’t think it’s the coil that’s causing me pain). As well with the coil as I don’t bleed So I don’t know if my pain is related to my cycle or not as I can’t pin point when my cycle would be, so thought maybe coming off it or just on the pill might help me pinpoint what pain is to do with my cycle and what is endo pain throughout the month (if that makes sense). It’s absolutely lousy having to chase hospitals up and stuff I’m with you on that one- my local hospital is appalling too. I went last February and My July appointment got cancelled due to covid and rearrange for February next year so it be had to wait a full year for a follow up appointment- which is shocking. luckily my doctor referred me to the pain clinic too at the same time so I’ve spoke to them in the mean time. Thank god this year has flown by and it’s less than 2 months till I see my gynae again
