Walking after laparoscopy

Hello everyone,

I'm wondering how walking is after a laparoscopy. Obviously not on the first day of surgery but I mean a few days afterwards? Would it be possible for me to do a bit of light walking out and about to keep me from going stir crazy? I swear I read somewhere that it was meant to combat blood clots so surely it can't be a bad thing?

I get that this is a person to person thing but I don't fancy being bed bound for too long.

Absolutely a good thing to do! It's good for getting the gas out your system as well as circulation. If you feel wobbly take someone with you. My mum came with me for little walks (started at 10mins very slow). It made me feel so much better to get some fresh air :)

Yes move about as soon as you can. Just walking about the house every hour is a start. Slow and short. Rubbish time of year to get outside but remember how tough you have been so far. After my last Lap , consultants face was a picture when he found me walking to a chair. ‘I aint got no DVT’ ( said in silly voice) lol xxx

My surgeon encouraged me to get out of bed each day, walk a bit, (even if it is granny steps), and stay on the couch to rest not back to my bed- certainly helped me recover from lap.

I can recommend pacing yourself and doing tasks in timed intervals and taking breaks, instead of doing all at once and getting too sore. You'll know, just listen to your body and relax if you need to.

They’ll encourage you to be mobile ASAP. Blood clots are a potential risk so the better the mobility the better. However it depends on the size of the surgical incision. Mine was fairly HUGE. So the following day just getting off the bed into the chair was a major marathon. The following day getting into the shower. Each day though huge improvements were made. It is uncomfortable, but mobility is important to getting bowl functions etc back to “normal”

You will know your body better than anyone else. The medical team can advise on typical behaviour and symptoms.

Returning home after major surgery, remember you can’t lift anything larger than about a pint of milk. So when my husband went to work we had to have a separate small bottle of milk for me. My tea mug was used to fill the kettle up with! Sounds weird but prevented heavy lifting.

Best of luck with it!

I have quite a lot removed during and had a large cyst removed I have 3 cuts and was very sore but walking around the house that’s night helped with the gas pain in my ribs and shoulder and peppermint tea helped too, but I kept a routine and got up wash morning as normal and got showered and rested on the sofa it is a little hard walking around but little steps are fine you make huge improvements each day just just have to walk trough the soreness!

Hi there, I had a Lap last yr, getting out of bed was a mission, for the first few days. Take it easy tho u dont wanna pull or irritate any of the incisions. Small steps to start, I found it difficult to walk for at least a week afterwards....take it easy
