First laparoscopy

Hey..

I had my first laparoscopy two weeks ago and the consultant didn’t come back to see me after my surgery (apparently had to rush off and I was still asleep in recovery)... obviously I have so many questions but my follow up isn’t until July 3rd..

I found out anyhow that I had mild endometriosis lining the back wall of my uterus and they have lasered it and also drained a cyst on my ovary. I’ve just got to carry on taking the mini pill which is working for me at the moment so fine with that.

Mainly I just wanted an idea of whether it’s likely to come back?.. Or is it possible that it’s totally gone as it was only on my uterus? Though I know it’s not curable.

Thanks in advance..

Kitty xx

Hello,

I can't offer much advice as I'm in a similar situation. But having said that, I have been to my GP who received a copy of my letter and they were able to talk to me (briefly) about the findings, so it might be worth doing the same. This obviously isn't the same as speaking to the consultant but could be a decent option in the mean time.

I was also advised that the consultant may be able to schedule in a phone call, so calling the secretary to schedule this may also be a good option.

I hope you manage to get some answers, and I wish you the best in recovery! X

Hi, thank you! It might be best that I visit my doctor then. The consultant did call me the next day (as I was leaving her messages everywhere) but she literally just told me where it was and that I would be fine to have children. I didn’t get to ask my questions and properly speak with her. 🙈 thanks for your help xx

How frustrating! Also, going back to your original post, I believe excision of endo, as opposed to ablation, is the preferred method of removal. A commom analogy used is excision is like pulling a weed out from the roots, whereas just burning it off/ablation is like snipping it at the stem. I've seen stuff about excision having a lower rate of recurrence than ablation/laser though, so it may come back. Might be worth trying to see an excision specialist if you can! X

I had the same, I was about to leave the ward after my lap, the surgeon came by and all she said is you have endo, we burnt it off, your tubes are clear and then left. I was also still a bit drugged up so it made even less sense then. To be honest I learnt the most information from my letters that they sent to my GP so hopefully they will help you until your appointment.xx

So terrible, my first surgeon did this. Just clocked off and when home when I went into recovery. Luckily my step mum (who is a senior doctor at a different hospital) demanded his personal phone number due to negligence and she took the results down for me. My second surgeon came to see me when I was about 2 hours out and ready to understand the results. My results weren't discussed at all in my follow up, I was just given a new pill to stop my excessive bleeding. There really needs to be a formalised process here!

It’s possible that it could be gone but also possible that it could come back! Unfortunately your surgeon wouldn’t be able to predict this though. I think it’s like 50/50 odds if I’m remembering correctly. It also depends on how the surgeon removed the endo (ablation vs excision). I didn’t really know much until my post op as well. It’s a long waiting period but it’s normal! Don’t stress too much and just focus on recovery!
