Hormone treatment vs Mirena

Hey

I wanted to ask about how your hormone treatment has been going. What kind of medication are you on and how is it working for you? Is there still pain? Are you still bleeding?

Also have you got or had a mirena in and how has your experience been with that?

I’m not sure what I should be doing. I could use some advice please :(

Hello, I just responded to a similar question regarding the benifits of the coil so thought I would post it again here:

I suppose it depends on what type of side effects you are willing to put up with to curb other symptoms. My coil is coming out next month after 4.5 years and initially, once it had settled after around 11 months, it was great. I have stage 4 endo and adenomyosis and had 2 week periods with 1 week really heavy and the coil basically stopped my periods to the point I got a few days very light bleeding a month which could be dealt with a liner.

However in the 4.5 years I have had the coil I have had to quit my job where I was working 40 hours per week with a 2 hour commute and was on a path where I was succeeding, go on disability benifits, see a psychologist once a week for chronic anxiety and depression, have my sex life really diminish, have my social life turn non existent, quit as the lead singer of a band, feeling generally very ‘meh’ about everything.. and I’ve suddenly realised in the last few months that this is what the coil got me. It stopped my periods at the cost of everything that used to bring me joy.

There aren’t words enough to explain how upset and angry I am at having been bullied into the coil by my consultant. And now I am having to prepare mentally for the often inevitable ‘crash’ of having it removed at my lap next month, the thought of which terrifies me as my brain is not a happy place right now.

If I could go back now I would never have agreed to it, I would (and will be once it’s out) be putting up with the pain and bleeding because at least I would have a life again and feel something other than sad and disappointed.

I’ve always turned down every other treatment thrown at me (provera etc) as I looked at the side effects and just felt it wasn’t a risk worth taking. I manage everything now through diet and lifestyle which includes non-chemical or scented sanitary wear. If I have to become a card-carrying hippie to support my body so be it. Because anything... everything... is better than what the coil has done. And I didn’t even notice it until it has been in nearly 5 years and it’s too late to change any of it.

Awww I literally just read this on that post!

I’m so sorry for your horrible experience!

Can I ask why it was so bad for you? :(

What would you recommend I do?

So I had the zoladex injections. First time for six months (and came off it as doc only wanted me to have it for six months) and then few years later I had it for two years with the condition I took HRT tablets. My emotions were a bit up and down and I was quite tired but it did help with the pain and bleeding. The only thing whenever I stopped taking it the endo came back. About 7 years ago I changed consultants and she inserted a coil during a laparoscopy. It took a few months to settle. I know it’s not for everyone but I can honestly say (and I sure I have several times on here) it gave me my life back. From being in constant pain and not being able to walk some days, which affected my social life, relationship, work, depression .... everything got better and I mostly live (touch wood) a relatively pain free “normal” life. I don’t know where I would be without it but I know it was not a good place. I have only good things to say personally. x

After the initial settle time, I have had probably around 4 flare ups in the whole time I’ve had it where I’ve had some period pain and bleeding (I can only assume these are what regular periods are like (not endo periods) and they’ve come and gone without without me really understanding the cause. That’s not a lot of pain or bleeding, at least relative to my past. I did have an issue getting to the 4th year of my coil where it seemed to stop working but they just replaced it and things went back to normal. Prior to the coil I did read all the books and stuck to organic food, eliminated things from my diet and even tried to eliminate chemicals (no shower gel, shampoo etc). but personally I didn’t see any change. I do hope you can find something that suits you.
