I've had a Marina fitted for over a year now and it hasn't stopped my periods yet. I have much less heavy periods now but mine still really hurt.ABut because I'm still bleeding it will still encourage the endo to grow too. I know a lot of people that have them though that have no periods anymore. I'm not sure if it hurts going in because I was under anesthetic but apart from the above I have no other problems with it being in.
I had a Mirena fitted several years ago, the bleeding did frustratingly continue for a while, after three months I combined the Mirena with Prostap injections just for three months, this stopped the bleeding, and I was period and relatively pain free for 4 years.
If you do chose to have one fitted, stick with it, I'm very glad I did....I know everyone's different, but I feel Mirena needs time and the benefits are well worth the time you wait till it settles in...
If you find smears or other procedures in the vagina painful - using a speculum to open it up, then you hve the right to get the mirena installed at the hospital with painrelief and anaesthetic.
IF you try on Tuesday and it is too painful - stop the process and ask to be referred to the hospital.
For endo ladies it can be extremely painful getting mirena inserted and just be aware that you can demand help if you feel you need it.
My mirena was installed under general anaesthetic - took bout 5 months to stop periods and aside from a small hiccup in year 1 of the stoppage where I had two periods a month apart and thought the mirena had failed - that turned out to be the last 'event', and I've not even had spotting since then.
Fantastic thing. I will definitely be getting it replaced when it runs out. Just under 2 years left of the 5 year lifespan of mine. By far the best thing in terms of treatment I have tried.
Wish to goodness it had been invented in my teens as it would undoubtedly have made a huge difference in terms of my life choices.
Saves a small fortune in tampons and towels, and no periods = no PMT, no mess, no cramps. It's made such a huge difference in my life I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you try it.
Certainly it needs setting in time, which can give you the odd twinges and cramps, and cause erratic bleeds to some extent, but all the while it is settling in, the chemicals it releases cause the menstrual lining to thin to the point where hopefully it stops you bleeding completely.
Once that happens, wow it is life changer. You can't imagine just how much of a burden having periods is, until they are stopped and you realise that there is so much time to be gained in stopping periods.
My periods were 2weeks a month of hell, sometimes more. So each year I have gained back 6 months at the very least, and probably a lot more than that in period free hours to be doing all sorts of things provided I can muster the energy. It gave me back my life.
Hi Rosie, I had a mirena fitted in June and apart from the on and off spotting at the start I am happy I had it fitted my periods are virtually non existent already but I know everyone is different my only draw back is the very painful breasts that I have been getting since June but I'm hoping that this will settle down with time. I did find the fitting experience very painful but I got through it and you do get over it but you might not experience that we are all different. Good luck and I hope you get some positive benefit from it.
Really positive experience. I managed to have it fitted under local-it wasn't pleasant but was manageable though I would recommend pain relief before on top of the anaesthetic.
Although I have always suffered from bad pain my periods have been relatively light so I am fortunate in that I have only had a little bit of bleeding since May. It has been a wholly positive experience thus far. I had forgot what normal felt like and have since had 2 or 3 entirely pain free days and a considerable lowering of my daily pain. Until I had it fitted I really did not realise how bad things had got and was needing to sleep all the time due to pain, losing weekends to lying down etc. I would recommend giving it a shot.
