Should I have a hysterectomy...adenomyosis

Hey lovelies.

Advice very much needed from anyone that has taken the plunge and had a hysterectomy please!

I have had 3 major lap surgeries now to remove endo from my ovaries, bowel, bladder, pelvis...pretty much everywhere apart from my tubes. After years of unexplained infertility and a very emotional journey we finally fell pregnant naturally to our amazement and we have a beautiful healthy 2 year old boy.

We would LOVE to give our son a sibling and have been trying for around 18 months but no second luck for us. I’ve had some blood tests and I am not not even ovulating so have been labeled again with ‘Unexplained infertility’

Recent pelvic scans show that I have adenomyosis and to be honest it’s pretty miserable. I was doing ‘OK’ but every month I have horrendous periods and terrible wind, constipation and pain/cramping/clotting. The bleeding is ridiculous and I’m not even ovulating.

I’m at a cross roads. Emotionally I don’t think I can go through the fertility testing again and we won’t have IVF as we have our Beautiful boy. I keep questioning why I am putting my body through this every month when it seems unlikely we will have a miracle second child .

My surgeon has delayed the inevitable so that we can try for baby 2 but it’s just not happening and I’m suffering every month. I feel like it’s time to make the decision to have the surgery but I would really like an honest opinion from anyone that has had it. I’m so worried it won’t solve the pain and issues and that with the surgery will come other problems so I want to weigh it up.

Can anyone help or advise?xx

I have adenomysis and waiting for a hysterectomy. The only cure for adenomyosis is a hysterectomy. I had 3 months of prostap injections to confirm the pain was adenomysis and the pain did go away. Has your doctor said anything to you about turning your ovaries off for 3 months to confirm that is what’s causing the pain?

I had endo and for years I had chats removed off my ovaries.

Painful periods my moods were terrible sex hurt.

I took the plunge and decided to have a hysterectomy. I went on for the operation last November to them be told they couldn’t do it as the endo was so bad my bowel had stuck itself to my womb so they had to only take my overy.

Year later I went for the hysterectomy the second time this time with a bowel surgeon in place.

And I can honestly say it’s the best thing I did. Recovery was fine I had a full hysterectomy. I had small part of my bowel removed but didn’t have to have a bag.

I was up on my feet and doing stuff after about 3 weeks. (Even driving). I did pick up a urine infection due to having temporary stents in. But once they were removed all was good.

Am now 3 months after the operation back to normal. No pain no periods no mood swings. I am on HRT. Downside I put on weight with the HRT.

My choice was easy o didn’t want anymore children I am 42 and I have one child and 3 step children.

For me it was the best decision I made.

Good luck x

Think it depends on your age and everything else. I was turning 40 when i had mine earlier in the year after trying for 11 years to have a second child and a horrendous previous surgery for endo removal. I didnt want to keep going through the same op (and nightmare of dealing with GPs and consultants) every 2 years. 7 months on I have just started to notice and think I have some adhesions or endo starting to form in one area but a million times better than i was pre-op.

Hello ladies,

I have just turned 33,

Thank you for all of your replies/advice.

I have previously had zoladex between surgeries but suffered horrendously with night terrors and sweats.

Whilst I appreciate that is possibly better than pain, I opted against having it again.

Due to the fact that I am not ovulating I am guessing my ovaries aren’t really working anywhere so I’m not sure that option would really help in making a decision. My last scan showed my ovaries were ok with no signs of any more endometriomas.

With regards to my uterus my surgeon was quite sure that was my biggest issue.

I have such severe bloating that the lower part of my abdomen often protrudes and I look at least 4 months pregnant. And the wind and cramps I get after eating are very embarrassing. I have tried elimination diets and cutting dairy, gluten, fodmap you name it so I think it is connected with the Adenomyosis. I workout frequently too and I’m no over weight but still have a bulge.

I am concerned that if I have the surgery I then may gain weight due to hormonal issues also and then have to live with the side effects of HRT at a younger age.

It’s so hard to decide, equally, every single cycle I have to try plan around potential holidays and special occasions as I often can’t even leave the house due to the horrendous bleeding and bowel side effects 😭😭😭😭xx
