I’m due for a pre op soon for a laparoscopy but I have received a letter saying it will be a cystectomy (I have cysts on both ovaries) and most likely it will be a laparotomy (open surgery) has anyone else had this, how was it? And the recovery time? Thanks xxxx

Me! I’m 16 dpo today. Had a laparotomy to remove a grapefruit sized cyst from my left ovary. They ended up taking the entire ovary, plus part of the other due to scar tissue and endometriomas. I was in the hospital for 3 nights and have been staying with my parents ever since. Pain hasn’t been bad at all. But I’m still pretty restricted with what I’m able to do. Will probably be off work for at least another 2 weeks - luckily I am able to work from home!

It was definitely scary, but at this point, my frustration with feeling good but not being able to do a lot is the worst of it!

Yes at this point anything would be better then the constant pain from cysts, they’ve said they will try to keep both ovaries but obviously can’t make promises they will especially as the right ovary has 2 cysts on it xx

Hi there Gemma! I’m due for a laparotomy too! End of this month. Have you gone through it? And so how was it. What type of cyst do you have? Mine’s chocolate but I was never diagnose or had any issues of endometriosis before, so I’m hoping it’s haemorragic cyst instead. But anyway..

Boilermiss, I’m Glad to hear that you’re not feeling that bad after laparotomy. Did you have any bloating and what type of cyst was it?

It was an endometrioma. Tons of bloating before surgery. Still have some swelling but it’s getting better each day. I will say, recovery is exhausting!

What about after? I hear laparoscopy will have bloating due to the gas they put in you. I wonder how it is for laparotomy. I had 4 cysts in total. 1 big choc cyst in the left and 2 tiny ones with 1 9cm looks like normal but could be endometrioma too as they say it usually happens bilaterally. I hope they can save my ovaries, if not at least one. :(

I hope the best and fastest recovery for you!

If they know you want to save at least one ovary they will do their best to save it. They were able to save most of my right ovary! I had some gas pains for a few days, but I think it was just my body waking up. It wasn’t bad at all.

Best of luck to you!!
