Not sure about surgery

Hi

Hope someone can help, I've been seen by a specialist endo consultant who has said a laparoscopy is indicated, I've definitely got haemorrhagic ovarian cysts and adhesions which were picked up by ultrasound

He's also suggested either the mirena coil or an ablation, there wasn't really a third option of neither of the above!

Really not sure which way to turn, I've had awful periods for years but it was the abdominal pain that prompted the referral. In others experiences will the surgical excision of the adhesions really in the long run help the pain, heaviness and frequency of periods?

Appreciate your thoughts

Hi,

Surgery outcome is different for everyone, it may get rid of your pain and symptoms or scar tissue can make it painful from surgery, either way if you leave the Endometriosis you run the chance of it spreading further and causing a lot more damage to your organs, like I said everyone is different, I suggest you do a lot of research into your options and right any questions down that you have and take it with you to your next appointment and talk it through with your specialist, hope this helps, only you can make a decision that's best for you.

Has he diagnosed you laparoscopically already to be talking ablation ? Does he mean cyst ablation ornuterine ablation?

It s impossible to say as we are all unique. It's about a weighing up benefits and risks for your unique case.

It depends on what else may be happening to cause the pain eg if you have just the endometriomas or Endo elsewhere or Adenomyosis. Adhesions or nerve pain can also cause damage. Plus whether the surgery is done well and has no complications

I've not heard good things of uterine ablation, but if you have Adenomyosis surgical options are limited. In general it's not meant to be as effective i think because Endo can be left behind underneath, targeted excision by an appropriatrly skilled surgeon is meant to be better. But maybe that's different if it's for cysts.

Is he a BSGE accredited Endo consultant?

Thanks for your help, I'll have a look at the link and see x

Hi I had bad adhesions & endo removed 17 years ago for bleeding and pain. I had a mirena after that. Had very little bother until last year or so after I had mirena out, eventually I sought help went to gynae I was up for ablation to uterus as it seemed like it would really help but my gynae said no because it wouldn't help as they thought I had Adenomyosis on Saturday I had a lap adhesions all released again and some other bits with coil back in. I really hope that it will be good for another 17 years by which time I'll be well over the hill. Everyone is different but this is my scenario. My gynaecologists could never garantee bleeding will stop but it is a bit better with the mirena. They work to solve pain issues not bleeding. The only cure for adenomyosis I'm told is hysterectomy.

Hi, the Mirena should either stop your periods or make them very light. So well worth considering. It certainly works for me.

Hi as others have said it's different for all but in my case the ablation was the route I chose. My periods had been hideous since they started and I had tried many ways to control them for 30 years even asking "begging" for a hysterectomy but getting nowhere. I had two laparoscopies and had my appendix removed due to migration of the endo into my abdomen but nothing helped and found I was popping pills left and right to reduce the problem but nothing helped. As I had had a family and made the decision not to try for any more I opted for the ablation. I must say for me it's helped no end. I'm no longer prisoner to the bleeding which kept me in the house or being woken by cramps and sweating. I check my cycle closely and it's reducing in days as the months go on also contraception is still needed which is s pain as I don't want to keep filling myself with hormones as I get older as I've been doing that for years to escape the endo. I went for a screening for a coil but they won't do it as I've had the ablation so have to be referred to a gynaecologist if I want one and can't see the point in wasting their time just for a coil. In my mind I've made the right choice, but weight up your options and talk it over with family too. Best wishes.

Hey, I definitely agree that it is your body and your decision. A diagnostic laparoscopy may give you peace of mind and some answers to why you are experiencing so much pain. Please choose a surgeon you can trust and research before. If you leave it your symptoms may get worse. It's so hard to know what is going on without an operation but take time to consider all your options. Take care xxx
