New and scared

I'm new here and I've recently been diagnosed with endometriosis.

I'm on the waiting list for a lap and I'm honestly scared as hell.

Hopefully it'll be after my 19th birthday, but is there anything specific I should know about or do before and after my op?

Hi it is scary but you'll be in good hands.

Make sure you take loose comfy clothes to wear home and maybe a pillow to put under seat belt. Afterwards you will be sore so make sure you keep pain relief topped up. You may also bleed so get some pads in just Incase as you're not supposed to use tampons after surgery. Also get some peppermint tea in for the gas pains which you will get in shoulder as it helps . Get plenty of rest but try to move around as it will help disperse the gas and also helps with healing. Good luck.

Hiya, don't be scared, a diagnostic lap is pretty straight forward, even if they have to remove any endo whilst they are in there it will be a lot better than you think. You will be home quite quickly with nothing but paracetamol and ibuprofen and you are up and about fairly quickly after that (after my diagnostic lap I was hoovering the house a week after surgery and back to full sports training six weeks after surgery). My top tips are - take a scatter cushion with you, its really nice to have to hold against your tummy when you walk and to put between you and the seat belt on the way home in the car. Take loose fitting trakkie bottoms with you to wear post surgery and a loose fitting top that is easy to put on and get peppermint tea to sooth gas pains when you get home.

You will be fine xx

Edit - I posted this very shortly after JeanOsborne above ha! funny how our tips are the same - tried and tested!!!

I was scared before my lap too, but came through it fine and got back to feeling normal quicker than I would have thought.

I'd suggest taking at least a week off work afterwards. It was helpful for me to be able to rest and not have to go in to work when I was in pain.

I had a friend bring me home from the hospital and stay with me for a couple of days, which was really helpful. I was able to do the basics of taking care of myself, but I really appreciated the emotional support and someone to deal with logistics like calling the cab at the hospital when I was still groggy from the anesthesia. Also my memory wasn't good as the anesthesia wore off, so I couldn't remember what the doctor had said so it was helpful for my friend to have heard it too.

This may not be everyone's thing, but I arranged in advance with my doctor to take pictures during the surgery and give me copies later. They helped me understand what was going on with my organs being attached with scar tissue, where the endometriomas were, what she'd been able to do and where there was still endo, etc. However, I realize some people are squeamish about seeing pics of their organs so this may not be for you.

Good luck! :)

Thanks! Luckily I'll have my partner by my side and his mum to drive me there and back, so I know I'm in safe hands with them

The main thing I've honestly been worrying about is the emotional support, because I've moved out of the family home to live with my partner in a new city, I won't have my mum there and that's the main person I need so I think that's what's bugging me the most

I might be too scared to ask for pictures but I've asked for as much information as the can give me so I know what's what
