Lack of endo specialists

Has anyone else had this problem where they live? I've written to my MP about it but I'm interested to find out if it's a widespread problem.

It is getting better - when i had my op there were only about 10 accredited endo centres in the whole UK, none in Wales, NI or Scotland and most were concentrated in the far south, mainly London.

The aim is for 50 centres UK wide and it is certainly on track when you tot up the 30 fully accredited UK endo centres and the 19 provisional ones which should become fully accredited in January next year, but you can be using now.

If you're in Basingstoke you have a huge choice compared to many parts of the country.

there are 14 fully accredited endo centres I can see in the London and home counties area to choose from.

and a further 4 of them on the provisional list. All within an hour and half drive. That's hardly a hardship compared to anyone living in Wales where there is only 1, or Northern Ireland where there is only 1, or Scotland where there are now just 2....or the Republic of Ireland which only has the one centre in Dublin for the entire country.

It is still not enough when there are lengthy waiting lists at each of them, given that 10% of all women are battling endo. But 49 scattered around the UK is a whole lot better than the situation less than 5 years ago.

and those are just accredited endo ones - there are plenty of gynae oncology specialist surgeons around who are trained to do complex endo surgery but prefer to specialise in cancers instead. Some of them also do endo work for the NHS, and yet they are not accredited endo surgeons.

All things considered - there is a pretty big choice these days for endo. Only two of those listed are to my knowledge private hospitals (Cheadle and Elland) the rest of the British ones are NHS.

If you struggle with transport costs to see a specialist surgeon there is financial help available for those on low incomes and benefits.

Hi

Yes you are so correct..... It disgusts me so much that there is 1 (one) guy in the whole of the UK that can treat endo, and he is out of the range price wise for most of us as he only does private. X
