I saw my GP today

Hi everyone,

I went to see my GP today, he gave 2 new meds to take, one antibiotics (Nitrofurantoin) daily for cystitis, the other tablet is for the Endo the pill (Yasmin).

Is anyone taking those tablets and if you are do they make gain weight? Or any other nasty side effects? And do they help with pains?

Thanks,

Sweety.

The patient information leaflets are freely available online to read through before you pay for the prescriptions or undertake treatments - just type in the name of the drug followed by patient information in google and you should get links to the info sheets that come with the drugs.

You do need a pdf reader to read them

medicines.org.uk/emc/medici... is the link for Nitrofurantoin

be sure to read it and be aware of the possible side effects that it may cause you and your digestive system.

medicines.org.uk/emc/medici... is the one for Yasmin pill. It is much more comprehensive and covers just about everything you may ever think of asking and more. It's a very thorough info leaflet.

and this article in the Daily Mail should prove helpful too regarding Yasmin

dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...

The yasmin pill is a combi pill - it does contain oestrogen as well as a synthetic form of progesterone, and for that reason it is less commonly prescribed for women with endo who tend to use pills that don't contain oestrogen as endo feeds on oestrogen. If it is your 1st pill then it is worth trying as a stepping stone perhaps to a POP or progesterone only pill or other period controller at some point in the future. You can find other users who have commented on it by typing yasmin in the search box on the green bar at the top of this page. There are other Yasmin users on this forum, but I don't recall anyone saying they were on the nitro for cystitis- thought lots of endo ladies do have cystitis so there may be some others with 1st hand experience on the forum.

First things first though - do read through the patient advice leaflets thoroughly.

Hope you find success with both but you can always go back to your GP if there are problems that don't suit you, and there are alternatives to try out for both period controlling and cystitis too.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I have to take it without any breaks to. I really hope I don't gain any weight while I'm on it, it took me a while to lose my weight and I'm right where I want to be.

no you wont gain weight, unless it effects you differently- i am uk size 6 and have stayed the same size.

I'm UK size 10 and I would like to stay that size.

Thank you for reassuring me. I hope it doesn't effect me differently, I am getting slight cramping and bloating feeling.

Hi - Yasmin has been one of the better pills I've been on. No weight gain or spotting (I have PCOS and suspected endo) and strangely enough my skin has cleared and I get less hair (sorry TMI!)

The only weird side effect I've had is quite bad hot flushes - I'm 30 and have had hormonal levels checked so definitely not menopausal!

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

Yasmin wasn't good for me, I felt suicidal while taking them, I stopped taking them after one week.

I'm glad they are working for you. I'm now taking citalopram which seems to be working fine, I haven't gained any weight while taking them.

Sweety.
