St Johns Wort..

After visiting to the drs about my PMS and not really getting anywhere, I decided to take things into my own hands and do some research. I've read some very good, and very negative things about St John's Wort and wondered if any of you could provide some real life experiences with this supplement? xx

I recommend you have a look into the subject of Estrogen Dominance as this is implicated for both endo and PMS, amongst other things. Also have a look at the Wellsprings Bio-identical Progesterone website.

"Estrogen Dominance" by Dr Michael Lam

I've heard that you have to take extra precautions if your on the contraceptive pill as a contraceptive as it interferes with it and may result in a pregnancy. Also I think it interferes with antidepressants. I don't know whether there is any truth in it as I only heard it from a friend.

Ok i usually don't admit to wat i do for a living on this forum but on this occasion I will.

I'm a pharmacist. And I won't even stock St John's wort in my pharmacy. It's a prescription only drug in Ireland and I think it should be here in the UK too.

It's an antidepressant. Don't let the herbal remedy facade make you think it's safe.

Also as evezy very rightly states it can stop the pill working as well as interfering wit lots of other drugs. It increases the metabolism of quite a few drugs.

Evening primrose maybe a better starting point for trying to treat pms.

Unfortunately sum Australian researchers decided to announce a few years ago there was no such thing as pms and some gps may still be influenced by this nonsense.

Hope this is at least a little helpful
