Mild gout and colchicine

For a number of years I occasionally get a twinge of gout, 1 colchicine sorts it for a few months till the next time. This one is longer lasting been 2 weeks now, still not at all as bad as gout can be. It happens in the morning and I have found that after a walk it can be gone by lunchtime if I don't take the pill. Unsure if I should take the colchicine daily anyway. Any thoughts.?

Apologies for coming on the CKD page but wasn't sure where to go. And I know it is only a very minor problem compared to most but am currently in Thailand and from experience am a bit wary of heslthcare advice.

Thanks for your patience.

I too have a little gout occasionally due to high uric acid. I am on a CKD diet and still get it. My Doctor prescribed a medicine to help with the uric acid. I am 82 years old.

Thanks for that (great name btw) not sure whether to keep on with the colchicine or let it be for the minute in the hope that it goes away. Just don't like taking too many pills.

Hello normanbyrott! I also have chronic gout mainly due to poor kidney function, and I also take one .6 mg tablet of colchicine per day. Even with that, I still have some pain in my feet almost daily, but it’s still manageable. I have had to do so much research online and re-adjust my diet and exercise regimen in order to avoid really ugly gout attacks (some of mine have been so horrific that it has lasted for almost two months). I keep away from whole grains of any kind (whole grain wheat, oats, barley, rice and corn); no foods containing fructose (learned the hard way that fructose and gout are not friends); and the usual gout enemies such as red meat, shellfish or any fish, turkey, sometimes tomatoes, high fat foods, etc. It seems the list is almost endless. And I’ve actually found that exercise (even just walking) can sometimes also encourage an attack, even a minor one. But I have had gout for many years and am unable to take any maintenance drugs such as Allopurinol. I can only take colchicine to relieve the pain. I would recommend speaking to your GP to find out why the attacks are happening more often. You may just need a slight increase or readjustment to your medication routine. I hope you will find this helpful. Wishing you all the best! 😊🙏

Thanks for the reply which I've only just seen. Since posting I am now on a daily colchicine as the gout has become a daily event, and also this last week in both big toes. No serious pain, just blxxxy irritating and annoying. I find that an early walk helps keep it down - after an early colchicine.Keep well.

I have bouts of chronic gout, came on when my kidney function dropped to 36. I was advised to take daily Alluprinol but avoid it as I too don't like taking pills. I take CoDydramol when it's bad but also find mild, regular exercise helps as does avoiding certain foods. When it comes on it's in my left knee & can literally throw me to the ground but I can get on top of it quickly by taking 2 tablets straight off then weaning as it improves. Sometimes helps to 'dig' my fingers in below the knee cap & by moving the joint open & shut it 'feels like the crystals are cracking'! Good luck!
