creatine ?

I have a question please - have tried, but without success to find an answer : I have a good eGFR result, but my creatine is high - I am sticking to a low protein diet which has helped raise my eGFR but has no affect on my high creatine level? What can I do to bring my creatine level down ? Also, what is the difference betwen protein and creatine ?

Thankyou

First of all, it's the creatinine, not creatine, that the eGFR is based on. Not knowing what you are calling good eGFR and what you think is a high creatinine, I can't really answer your questions.

Sorry Betty's mom. I should have made it a clearer question and phrased it better, I was in a rush !Will do at a later stage - in the meantime- thankyou for your reply.

Unfortunately what you wrote does not make sense to me. The way that they calculate the egfr is they take your age, sex, race, and what level your Creatinine is, and that results in the egfr. You say your egfr has increased, but that your Creatinine has not improved. Well this just can not be. Obviously your gender and race can not change. So the only other two factors used in calculating your egfr are age and Creatinine. Just aging one year will not affect egfr much, so all that is left is your Creatinine. But you say it is unchanged. Therefore it is not possible that you have made your egfr better but have unchanged Creatinine.I wonder if you are mistakenly reading your results incorrectly. A misunderstanding perhaps about what is better. The HIGHER the level of your EGFR, the better. So a level of 70 is better than 60 for example. BUT for Creatinine the LOWER the level is better. So 1.4 is better than 1.6 for example. What you describe is simply not possible (improvements in egfr but worse Creatinine levels).

You ask the difference between protein and Creatinine. Creatinine is produced by your own body as your body naturally breaks down a substance in your muscles called Creatine. Creatine is what gives your muscles strength. The kidney then filters the excess from your blood and urine to keep a normal level in your body. That is why it is used to determine egfr. If your kidneys are not functioning well, they do not filter enough Creatinine out of the body and you have an excess amount in your blood.

ALSO by taking in too much protein in your diet, exercising too much, taking certain medications, taking certain supplements, your body will produce more Creatinine than it otherwise would. This is why low protein diets are recommended. To prevent excess Creatinine and make the workload even worse on the kidney.

A simple definition of protein is difficult as they are complex. You get them from food sources. Proteins are made up of chemicals called amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscles, bones and to make hormones and enzymes in the body. They are also a source of energy.

dehydration, diabetes, congestive heart failure, autoimmune disorders like IgA, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and many other diseases can cause high creatinine. As can certain meds such as Ace Inhibitors, certain antibiotics, Fibrates, certain antacids, nsaids, vitamin c supplements, and few more can cause high creatinine
