I just got back my latest lab results. I initially followed Lee Hull's book stopping kidney disease but lost too much weight so I had to modify it slightly. I went totally vegan which means I have lentils, nuts etc which is not strictly on his plan.
last 3 GFR results after switch were 49,47,52. Last 3 before switch were 40, 36, 42. That is a 25% increase in GFR.
BUN was 16, 19, 17 after switch. Numbers before were 28, 25, 25. That is a 33% reduction.
I think anyone new to this community who needs to improve their kidney function has to consider giving up meat and dairy. As Lee Hull explains in his book you need to reduce the load on your kidneys.

Do you take any supplements and how are your Iron levels, ie do you have Anemia issues? Do you have issues with bones, teeth, Calcium levels, Vitamin D etc? What about muscle strength and or muscle wasting? How old are you and do you know the cause of your kidney disease?
I actually am already reading his book, and while I will say it is prudent to decrease acid load on the kidneys, I don't see why meat eaters can not just eat less meat, like a proper portion size, and still have kidneys improve. Matter of fact I know they can because that describes exactly me. I can maintain and build muscle very easily following about 40-50 grams of protein per day. All kidney patients are different because Veganism works for some does not mean it will work for all.
I was eating meat and just in a downward spiral. Book tells you why meat produces too much nitrogen for people with low GFR to handle. If you can manage more power to you.
I was diagnosed at CKD level 3b. My Doctor put me on a CKD diet and it has improved my eGFR results. The diet is tailored to my blood work results and am restricted to potassium, phosphorus and sodium. It is working for me. If I were to change my diet I would contact my physician.
Excellent report, Cdn52runner! I ordered Lee Hull's book and there is an incredible amount of info. furnished.
I have given up red meat. However, I do include some others and follow the combined diabetes/kidney meal plan from my dietitian. Receiving that help was a godsend for me.
Although I restrict dairy, I do continue with some because of osteoporosis and too much wt loss. I would recommend his book to any who are serious about kidney function and better managing their kidney scores.
My last three GFR scores went from stage 3a to 2 and Alc scores went from prediabetic to normal.
What works best for one doesn't necessarily for another and following my diet plan along with more exercise and tweaking lab report scores as needed has proven very effective for me.
